Audio file Episode 177 - Luke Cage - 113.mp3 Transcript Al Hi everyone, before we get started we wanted to let you know that we recorded most of our Luke Cage rewinds before the resurgence in black lives matter protests after the killings of George Floyd and countless others. As you probably know the Luke Cage Series goes deep into the kinds of racism faced by black people every day. Tony As hosts who are not black, we have not covered as well as we should have, but we are trying to get better. Tony We stand in solidarity with the black lives movement so our non discussion of the issue in these episodes comes from recording before the tragedies and not ignoring the issues. Al Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic reward, the podcast that rewatches reviews and responds to every movie show and one shot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm al Rodriguez. Tony And I'm Tony Cameron. Al And before we get into it, we want to ask you to follow us on Twitter. We are at MCU_rewind and if you could subscribe to our podcast and give us a rating that would be awesome. Al An you can tell your friends, I think that's a good thing. You should tell your friends. Tell them that they're looking really nice today. Ask them if they lost some weight or gain some weight. If they're that kind of person. Al You know, maybe they're working out and muscle and I've gone on. Too bad of a tangent. Anyway, tell your friends about this podcast. And now let's talk about the actual thing that we're supposed to be talking about, not by Stupid Tangent. Al The season finale of episode. Sorry, the season finale of season one of Luke Cage Episode 13. You know my steez, which originally premiered September 30th, 2016. Tony An I'm a failure because I forgot to write a summary, so I just copied one right off of Wikipedia, so here's a summary. I have never read before. Let's see how it goes. Speaker 5 Improving Tony In flashbacks, striker helps Lucas become a boxer in eventually, leading to the latter winning an important match in the present Cajun striker. Continue their fight inside and outside the barbershop. In the confusion, night drops her phone and Dillard looses the file. Tony Which proves the cages innocence. Tony Cage tries to deal with striker but eventually knock some out when the suits power system fails. Dillard is arrested after probably adding cages. Lucas Alvarez. Oh that shades Alvarez uses nights to phone to lure Candace out of hiding and kills her without whose testimony. Tony Dillard walks free. Ridley blames the night for keeping Candace at a private place instead of protective custody. Federal marshals arrest cage for his escape from Seagate. Claire kisses him before he leaves and promises to call a good lawyer that she knows. I wonder who that is. Fish finds the files to clear cages name. Tony In the barbershop, Dillard's reopens Harlem's paradise with Alvarez by your side and night till watching them, Claire considers taking up in Self Defense classes. Hospital by Stryker is visited by bursting, bursting, Berinstein Bear. Al For a minute I was wondering why you were using like different names. The things that we don't usually call these characters, and then I realized, Oh yeah, that's right, you just copied from Wikipedia. Tony Yep, so much that I didn't know who Alvarez was until I read ahead half a sentence. Al Alright, thought there was a random character that we've never seen, just showed up in the finale. OK, yeah. Tony Alright, let's start our fast facts. Speaker 7 On my left God. Speaker 3 Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it. Tony You didn't see that coming now. Tony Do you have any fast facts? Al No I don't. I I kind of put everything that. Al Would may be possibly be if aspect into things about the characters. So no. Tony OK, so you mix them in with slow facts. I get it. Yes, all right? Well this episode's title is called you know my steez comes from the Gang Starr song from the album moment of truth. And as I mentioned at the end of last episode. Tony No idea what Steve's was. Maybe it's something that's very common, but I. Tony Just not come up with the Kip slang anyway. L do you know what's teases? I have absolutely no idea, alright? Steves means? I looked up a person's distinctive an attractive or impressive style of dress or way of doing things, or the quality of being effort will be. Tony Effortlessly. Tony Stylish without trying more fashionable, which is ironic because of the fashion that striker is wearing through this episode. Al His his horrible looking uh power suit. Tony Yes. Which would you get some answers about? That I I was happy to see? Al Yeah yeah, that was good. Tony I mean two things. At the end we see Claire getting finally starting her self defense classes or getting a flyer for that. And that poster said it was run by calling the wing. Tony Who we contact? People know from iron fist and people who watch these shows no from iron fist. Al So. Al I I guess my question is why does she need Self Defense Class? I mean we haven't seen her be the the person who needs help, you know while. Tony Yeah, I mean she yeah, not since Daredevil season one really right? Al Yeah, and that was a situation that like not a lot of people can get out of 'cause she was kidnapped by like. Tony Multiple armed people. Yeah, and then later she fought ninjas. Some right? Yeah, I think she killed one. Did she stab? Yes she killed. She killed a ninja 'cause it was the one that they autopsied. Al OK yeah, I I mean it, I don't. I don't know what she's thinking. She'll get out of this. Does she want to be a hero on the streets? Is is that the? Tony Plan maybe. Maybe she wants to be ninja. Maybe she's playing on breaking lookout prison. Al Oh Al OK, I mean I doubt it, but maybe. And then you got like a team up situation going. Yeah everyone's looking at him taking the bullets and then she sneaks around and does murder. She does. Yeah exactly and just yeah OK alright Alright and then also at the end of the episode we see when Misty walks into Harlem's paradise wearing that red dress. Tony Is actually the comic accurate outfit for Misty Knight, except for she has both arms. Oh, OK. Tony Yeah, that that's all I have for our fast facts. Al OK, well then in that case, let's move on to heroes. Speaker 4 Maybe it's enough. Speaker 4 But the world thinks I'm a hero. Speaker 4 I saw you. Speaker 4 You're a hero like a for real superhero, which is. I'm not like a Groupie, Stalker type, but. Speaker 5 I'm Luke Cage. You can't burn me, you can't blast me and you definitely can't break me. I am Harlem and Harlem is me. Al Who should we start with? I I? I mean I, I feel like we should start with Luke. Al Yeah, good on that, yeah. Tony Alright, Um, I don't have actually this whole episode. I don't have a whole lot of notes because a lot of this episode was just the climax battle an what they called the denouement. Just like wrapping up everything. Al So that is that French. Tony Um, maybe I probably actually. I remember learning in college. It's like the the after the action climaxes is like the ending of the story where everything like. Tony Starts going downhill like wrapping up. Al Gotcha, So what was that called again Day Numa? Tony Yeah danamma oh. Al OK, well I'm hoping I remember that word. I like it. Al Yeah yeah, and and I'm pretty much kind of the same actually. I probably have more notes about him, but I feel like I'll talk about him the least. Al Maybe, maybe Misty less anyway, yeah, so you know the first part of of this episode is him fighting diamond back and there's so much involved with that, so I don't know if there was anything specific you wanted to touch on there first. Tony I mean, I, uh, it's just like. Tony How he figured out before I figured out which is unusual in these shows that it was his punches, who was powering diamondback, was that obvious? I just missed it. Al I did not notice at all. Tony Yeah um, did they verify that? I mean, that's what I assume because what happens is he stops fighting and then his suit powers down. I think he absorbed the power from his punches and stuff. Oh no, um, so they so during the end of that fight they kept interlacing that with the flashback of when they were. Al Teenagers and then they were boxing an. Al There were like two things that they they kept that they they mentioned like during the boxing one was make sure you breathe 'cause without breath you don't have energean without NRG you're not doing anything right, so that's I think that was linking to the you don't have any. NRG in the suit and then the other one was. Al I mean, I don't know who was actually saying it, but it was. It was someone telling Luke or Carl at the time to let the enemy wear themselves out. So basically the Homer boxing. Tony Situation, that's what I was thinking, yeah. Al So I I had assumed that the suit just ran out of juice because. Al He just kept punching. Luke and Luke was kinda just able to take it. Tony OK. Tony I mean that. Tony That's what I thought happened. And then like I don't know why it occurred to me like well, as soon as Luke stops punching and throwing him, he loses enerji. So I thought he was absorbing. You know, the energy that Luke put into him. Tony Which would actually might be a cooler power. Al Yeah, it's like a Black Panther suit. Speaker 5 Yeah. Al But nowhere near is good. Tony Alright, well then there goes my notes about him stopping fighting to power down Willis. Tony Yeah. Tony Yeah, this fight. I don't know if we want to talk about now or talk about with diamondback. Tony Should we just talk about the whole fight since he's like? Al Yeah, it's it's such a big part of this, an. Honestly, those are my only notes about diamondback. Also during this fight. So yeah, let's let's just will include all that here. So yeah, what do you want to go with it? Tony Alright, so do you remember in Thor The Dark World when? Tony Malacus minion, I can't remember his name like picked up that giant rock and threw it at Thor and it just looks like cartoonishly ridiculous. Tony Yes, I I I remember that vaguely. But yeah, that that's how I feel about this whole fight. 'cause they're just two normal. I mean they're they're strong guys, but they're normal looking guys. Just punching people across the street or throwing motorcycles with pretty much one hand is like. Tony I know it's trying to look strong and this might actually be what it would be like if there were real superheroes, but it just looks completely unrealistic. Al It does well. I mean, you have to remember that that's basically at kind of everything we see. Captain America do only with less jumping around and like acrobatic stuff. Tony Yeah yes and no. Yeah, I I do specifically remember when Captain America kicked a car so hard it swung into another guy, yeah? Al Yeah, so, but um, we don't see cap uppercut someone so hard they're flying 60 feet, at least to my memory. I guess there's. I guess that's true. I remember in Captain America the first Avenger, there's the scene where we see him kick someone. Al An that person goes flying through a door and I pretty sure it was a metal door, but a door. Oh yeah, yeah yeah, I mean he doesn't. He doesn't do that super kick off the boat too in yeah. Tony But I I think I I don't. I don't know why it works with cap. It definitely doesn't work with or or like you didn't work in Thor, The Dark World, or in Age of Ultron. When he picks up that I remember picking up a steel girder and swinging it like there was nothing, and that looks cartoony as well. Well, I I think part of that was the graphics. There just didn't look that good, yeah? Al On the steel girder, but I mean you're right, it's so weird seeing a normal human sized person like doing something to that effect when we see the Hulk do it well. OK sure, the Hulk is. Speaker 6 Yeah. Al Super big all around etc. And Green Yeah. Tony I mean like it doesn't bother me with the Hulk or Iron Man because they both have their augmented like I mean as a suit. So I guess like my mind says OK, it's suit doing it. Hulk is Hulk. Al OK, yeah. Tony I think it looked just 'cause it looks like if there's no effort to it. Al OK, do you have the same thought when in Infinity war at the beginning we see Spiderman Catch a car. Tony No, but I don't think that's clear enough. Tony I mean, I don't think it's not like as Crystal Sharp. Is this like it's on cotton, the phone and shown on the little hologram phone? Al OK, Alright that that's true, OK? Tony But The thing is like I'm thinking bout the Superman movies like both Superman returns and Man of Steel or not man maybe mass appeal but I'm thinking. Tony BVS, like you see him carrying something ridiculously large a whole frickin Island and the space shuttle. Tony But it looks like he's struggling with the weight. So like my mind accepts it more. Al OK Alright. Tony Yeah, it's just like, yeah, I don't know it's just it should be. It should be harder. Al It is weird, but yeah, I I know what you mean. I mean they, but they have powers. I mean, I'm I'm going with what you said at the beginning, right? Like this is probably only because or this is probably what it would actually look like in real life. Yeah, weird, as all hell. Tony Yep. Tony Let's see what else do I have for this? I mean, if we're going dimeback stuff, we get some answers about his hammer tech suit. Al Yeah, let's talk about those. OK, go for it. Tony So was the do you think the suit was made like specifically or no? They said the suit was made specifically for Luke. Is hammer working with the black market or just delivering these super suits to anybody? Al Oh I mean, OK, so I'm. Al I have trouble believing it was made specifically for Luke for fighting Luke. I would believe it's made for fighting someone like Luke. Someone who's stronger, someone who is essentially bulletproof. I could believe that hammer tech saw like oh hey, there is a person with this kind of power, what? Al Would something to fight someone like that look like? And can we make it and sell it so I I guess I. Al I guess maybe they're like, Oh, he's kind of the only one we know of with his powers like it, so I guess we'll build something for him and maybe it will be able to sell or for fighting him. And then maybe we'll be able to sell that to other people for fighting. Al Enhanced people like like him. Al What was the question again? Tony I mean, like you kind of answered it like why? Tony Well, first of all, are they working with the black market or do they just sell these suits to whoever whoever wants them and has the money? Al So that's that's a really good question. I mean, I would believe that they are, you know, maybe they're getting a little shady. But like we we had this question a couple of weeks ago about diamondback, just in general, like how is he getting all of that hammer tech right? He had multiple different kinds of weapons from hammer he has this suit. Al Of the whole of. Al That he has the whole. Al Judas bullet right like? Al Either he has a really good hookup like um like someone selling to him that shouldn't be selling to him, or yeah, maybe hammer tech really is selling to him black market in in a way like I would definitely believe that given the amount of stuff that he has. Tony Yeah. Tony Yeah, I mean yeah, hammer tech like we know that Uh, Stark Industries sold to terrorists. It's probably not that surprising that they're selling to the gangs. Tony Of New York. Al Yeah, yeah exactly. They've been doing it since the 20s. I've never saw that that I've never seen that movie, so I don't know that takes place in like during the civil war. Oh OK, so 1800 got it. I can tell you have no idea. Al Oh glad I asked. Al I was going to say, Yeah, an. I mean, you know with the you know with Stark Industries you know selling to terrorist organizations. That was a a thing that they you know kept under wraps because you know was essentially like one small business unit was doing it to like bring in all this income and all that stuff. Al Right, so it could be the same thing at hammer or hammer tech, right? You've got someone who's business unit is losing a lot of money an you know they're not getting any raises or any promotions. And like you know what? I'm just going to start selling over here on the black market will bring in a lot of money into the company. Al We'll make sure no one asks questions and then and then we're good. And yeah, I get a promotion. Al 'cause I'm pretty sure stuff like that happens. I would believe it. Tony Yeah, it wouldn't be surprising at all. Tony I do have. Tony Questions about your theory that they built the suit to fight. Some, like specifically designed it based on Luke, but we're selling it to fight other heroes. Al Uh huh. Tony The only other heroes I could think of who have similar powers is Captain America. Tony That you could potentially fight with this suit like an I mean, I mean gets Black Panther, but he's not wiping down. Al Yeah, that's true, um, but that's just the the known ones, right? Al But I mean we, we keep talking that we have no idea when this takes place in comparison to things but. Al Um? Al At some point, either before now or after the the stuff with all the Inhumans happened, right? Yeah, at least with the fish oil tablets and Inhumans just showing up. So we have absolutely no idea how many Inhumans are powered. People exist throughout the world and that's just now like there were people with powers that were just kind of showing up. Before that we saw. Al During the first season of agents of shield, you know a couple of people just ended up with powers for miscellaneous reasons, so this could just be them getting ready. An maybe this is a prototype. Tony Yeah, so OK, I'll accept that I I I like most of the MCU. Forgot about the Inhumans. Al Yeah. Al Uh, I mean someday they'll be rebranded X men, but we'll see what happens with that. Tony They might be, well. I mean they can also reclaim Inhumans, 'cause I don't. I don't see them changing like Miss Marvel's origin. And we know we're gonna miss Marvel Show. Al Yeah, I don't see them changing that part. Al But I I I don't know well, we'll see how much of an impact they want the the mutants to to be in this in the MCU, 'cause I I still have some questions like how well they're they're actually going to fit all that in. Al But, uh, hey, you know they've got a lot of people. They've got enough money To to make sure they make money off of it. So yeah, well, yeah. Tony I mean, I'm not. Tony I'm going to bet that will have something to do with the multiverse and Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange. Al OK. Tony That's like they'll be established, but things will be tweaked. Kind of like, um, crisis on Infinite Earths on the DC side, where like they'll bring in aspects from different universes. Al OK yeah that would make sense. I Mean Hell there was even a storyline in the in the Marvel Comics that did something pretty much same concept. Tony Yeah, half of em, right? Al No, no there was, um, this was something more recent. Al Uh. Al I forgot what it was called. It might have been battleworld secret world. Tony Battleworld I know that'll roll was like three years ago. OK, yeah, we got it, but yeah, I've always meant to read that. Tony I'm actually reading through the adjacent air and Thor run, which like Battleworld happens in the middle of that. So I might read all the Times that. Al OK yeah it. I mean the the main comic was weird and I didn't read like enough of the like offshoot ones of the other stuff that was going on at the time. So like I feel like this stuff but. Al But I mean same thing, right? Like maybe maybe that is something. Maybe they'll they'll link to something like that and they'll just combine all the world's and then all of a sudden you know that one earth over there that had mutants instead of Inhumans. Now those numbers are here. Tony Yeah yeah no. I have a love hate relationship with those big crossovers. 'cause I love that they have all these other. Tony Like interconnected stuff like the MCU, but also I hate that you have to read all the interconnected stuff. It takes a lot longer than watching the MCU. Al Yeah, it's also a lot of planning to on the comic side, right? 'cause you have to like you realize like Oh wait, this other one happens before this story. Well, alright, well, I'll read that one first or hey, never mind, I'll just hope it doesn't spoil things. Al You know it's it's a It's effort. It kind of sucks, yeah? Tony This is yeah, and I'm I'm there reading comic 'cause like I don't care bout dazzler. Why am I reading this Dazzler Comic? Al Yeah, exactly right. Anyway, I think we're done with the fight part like the show was after the first 15 minutes. I I have one other thing I want to kind of break out the fight, but that's fine. So alright. So we've got this epic battle going on between Luke and Diamondback in a super suit. Al So this must have been on for awhile, right? Like like we're watching the show and it was, would you say 15 minutes, 20 minutes, something like that. It was. It was 15. I have a note specifically that the show was over at 15 minutes. Climaxes done end of the episode so. Al Um but one of the things that we see happens is Claire is watching the fight from her moms apartment, right? Yeah, and they're seeing this on the news an I I can't imagine this was like like, yes, this is probably like breaking news in the sense that you know, they just had the news on and then they like the news channel, just went to it. Al But it can't have been like super breaking where they interrupt normal TV and I'm willing to bet that the news channel they were watching still aired the normal commercials. So like this fight must have been going on for awhile, 'cause people still had to like get there and all of this stuff. Tony Yeah, I mean I don't know how far close mom lives from um, pops barbershop, but it takes forever to get anywhere in New York, so exactly. Tony Unless you're Spiderman, True. Al Oh, you know actually one other thing I wanted to bring up just about diamond back in general. I still don't really know exactly what kind of plan he had, but whatever bad plan he had once that fight spilled out into the public and everyone saw like whatever plausible deniability he had is gone. Al Because up until that moment they were like Oh well, Luke cage is the only one who could have possibly been the person to kill that cop, and now they're like, Oh, wait, there's this other guy that Luke Cage is fighting who also has the power to kill someone with one punch to the chest. Oh, OK. Tony Yeah, I mean I I I don't know like I, I think it was really as soon as he showed up in the Super suit because there was no way those two are going fight just in the barbershop. Yeah, that's true. It was always going to spill out somewhere, yeah? Al Yeah. Tony Dad planner. Al Yeah, exactly and and we know Luke will just throw people through windows even if he doesn't have to right like so he just he just likes throwing people through windows. Tony Yeah he does. I mean, that's a go to and you know, usually that's the end of the fight with that person. You throw someone through the window. Tony They're done unless it's a western. Al Yeah, exactly, this is not one of those where it will end. 'cause we've got a super suit involved. Tony I do always think of the scene in that one episode of Firefly where they punch a guy through a window and the hologram window just comes back up. Tony Alright, Yeah I do have some more like Luke questions. Al OK formats, let's go on, yeah well, we'll talk about him more. No more of this fight. Tony Yeah, I like his inspirational speech to the NYPD is a good message. Although it's a little heavy handed. Al A Little Yeah, but still you know words to live by. Tony Yeah, I mean we don't get a lot of. Tony Speeches from heroes who are not Captain America so. Al That's that's true, I mean. Al I I didn't look into this at all, but I mean you you kind of get the feeling that that's kind of what they were going with, right? Someone similar to Captain America? Not exactly on the epic scale that we get from the movies, but. Al Yeah, he's still. He's still looked up to. He's still a really standout kind of person. Yeah, he has to do the right thing. Tony Yeah, I mean again, that's one of the reasons I. I'm understand why he wrote or actors retire. But you know, I'd like to see her in action between Luke and Captain America. Luke teaming up with Captain America. Al Oh, that would be great. Tony I mean, he could still you know team up with Falcon if they get my culture back. Al Yeah, that's true. 'cause at least he's still in the MCU and. Al Captain America now, but Oh Man, I can just imagine. Al That, like them teaming up and fighting and then cap, throws the Shields. That way Luke cage can catch it and he catches it. And then he tries to throw the shield and it goes pretty much just as well as what happy did in Spiderman. Far from home. Just 'cause he's never practiced. Tony Also that shield he tried to throw was not is very vibranium. That's true. It was like 100 Pound Shield, Yeah? Tony Um, yeah. The only other thing I have for Luke is that he ends up being arrested by the FBI for a scaping. Al Yeah, all that for nothing, yeah? Tony Uh, it it was good that they actually are or I don't know if it's good. I don't know how I feel about it, but it was accurate that there were actually consequences to all this stuff. Al Yeah, that's true. It It Is It. It is nice in a sense that you know they they complete storylines, right? Tony Yeah, I mean. Tony It would make sense that all this stuff would go down like this like yeah, she just busted him out on TV. Someone will definitely call that in or they'll definitely notice. If they're all this stuff happening. Al Yeah, and I mean there's no even. There's even no guarantee that that that the people who called it in were random people. Al Like it could have also been people called in to work for Mariah. Tony Yeah, I mean, yeah, probably her assistant guy. Al Oh yeah, exactly. Al Yeah, so one of the things that Luke and Claire say when they were kind of being interrogated a little bit in the in the Police Department building. Al They're saying, hey, So what happens when? Where were you when that officer was killed and he said, yeah, I wasn't even in the state. I was in Georgia, went to go see the doctor to get that bullet out of me. Al Um, does anyone verify that like like no one, no one talks to the doctor? They they. They probably should. Tony Well, yeah, I mean I feel like all this stuff even if the FBI you didn't show up, they'd have to go and verify some of it. Al Yeah OK, alright? I mean I, I know that at this point they're like they are trusting of him so you know they're. Al They're making sure, but they don't. They don't ask for the doctor's name or where he lives or phone number, they just say Oh, OK, cool writing that, yeah, yeah, like 'cause, assuming that if for some reason this would go to a trial there not verify that part. Tony Oh yeah. Tony I mean there there are other questions about like the trial and the judicial system in New York, Eminem see you in New York. I'm questioning about something. We're going to talk about later. Tony Yeah, you wanna move on to Misty. Al Yeah, let's do that. Tony Alright, I've only got 2 notes for her. Tony Um, the first one I have is when Claire shows up to the fight, she pulls Claire forward to tell Claire she needs to keep back. Al I miss that. Tony She pulls her forward out of the fire or out of the crowd and told her she needs to stay back in the back of the crowd. Al Ah. Al Well, maybe she's directionally challenged. Tony Maybe? Speaker 3 Yeah. Tony Um, the other thing is, is just how she loses it when Candace is killed. I thought that was really good acting on Simone Missick's part. Al Yes, that was. I mean, that was, you know, very uh. I mean that was emotional right that? I mean, she specifically really wants to. Al Get mainly, I think she really wants to go after Mariah and well, everyone involved with Cornell and all that but. Al But she's especially upset because I mean that was personal, right? She was protecting Candace like that was. Yeah, that was her thing, she. Al Because she lost her phone. Al And didn't have a a pin on it to to lock it. Tony Yeah I alright. Tony Yeah, yeah, I mean. Tony She should know other peoples numbers. She should know claires number. Call Claire. Let her know that their phones missing. Al Well, Claire, what was there with her right? Al I, I mean, I don't think she noticed her phone was missing until after she saw Claire at pops. Tony OK, you might be right on the timeline. Tony Oh yeah, because it wasn't till she lost it like in the fight or right when the fight was starting last time so. Al Yeah, and she probably just and at the time I remember her talking to Claire and Claire said, yeah no, it's it's OK. Candace is safe. She's at my mom's so in her mind. Yeah, she was like Candace was completely safe but no. Speaker 6 Yeah. Tony Yeah, that's all I really offering Misty in this episode. Al OK, um pretty much the same. The only thing I I wanted to point out at the end was, you know, very last seen that we see Misty and she's back at Harlem's paradise. Watching Mariah just like the first time we see her. He was watching Cornell so now she's got a new person to. Tony Stock I guess Yeah, but I mean she's in a much weaker position because. Tony Mariah knows who Misty is, unlike the when Cornell didn't know who Missy was, and again. Al Yeah, I I remember we so we talked about that a little bit right? Like I remember you bringing that question of like why why should just there staring up at. Tony That area, yeah and. Al And the only thing I could think of that would make sense is just to keep track right you you want something there. Al To know like who are the people that are there, who are? Who are the people that are like showing up to have meetings that are leaving? Maybe you can work something with them if you need to. You know press on them in order to get you know evidence against Mariah or something to that effect. But I I I agree with you, that's. Al Probably not the best way to do it, because if you're overt then Mariah can plan around it. Tony Yeah, especially showing up, not someone she obviously knows who knows. He doesn't like her and showing up in a bright red dress and just staring at her. Al Yeah, come on at least something. You know. Darker, black, grey. Tony Dark red baseball cap sunglasses or that yeah, yeah, that wouldn't stand up in a club. Stand out in the club, I mean. Al Not at all. Al Yeah. Tony All right, uh, let's switch it up to our villains. Even though we talked about diamondback a lot already. Speaker 3 I ask you to what end? Speaker 3 Read it. Speaker 3 Run from it. Speaker 3 Destiny arrives all the same. Speaker 6 It's funny, isn't it? Leaving the best meant to be? Speaker 6 Deceived by their true nature, the hell. Does that mean that I am the L intent? Speaker 3 What about turning the other cheek? Speaker 3 Jesus saves. Speaker 5 Adult. Al Yeah, I mean I guess we can just skip 'em. I don't know if you had anything else, I've got nothing. Tony Yeah, I mean no, I don't have anything else. I guess a Burstein shows up at the end. Al Yeah, that's true. Um, and if I remember correctly, we never see him ever again, no. OK, so we have no idea what happens. Maybe that was planned for season three an you know, as one of those types of things where season one is the hero rising and then two happens, it's very different than in three it's. Al Heroes redemption super linked back to season one with the same villains or something, yeah. Tony Yeah, which you know I I. Tony I think I've talked about this before. I think they should just given every Netflix show three seasons and they have been perfect. 'cause no spoilers at all, but I really liked how both Jessica Jones and Daredevil ended their third season. Al Yeah, I thought those were really good. Like they they ended on a nice I I wouldn't say like cliffhanger. Anything but things were tide up and it's it's one of those things where like if they went on to a fourth season it would have been very different and that would have been really cool to see with the Luke Cage. Tony Yeah, and I mean Iron Fist as well. I feel like they said that for a good third season. Al Oh God, I yeah I'm I'm with you. It's mainly just my curiosity. Given the the little hints that they gave us were gonna happen yeah. And also probably the Punisher. Tony Yeah, I mean. Tony Try I feel I don't know. I don't know. I can't remember the season 2 or the punisher that well. 'cause you know, I'm not a huge fan of the Punisher so I didn't pay attention to that much. Al That's why I I remember just kind of rushing through it but but yeah, I mean I, I feel like the way that they set things up for all of these. A third season would be really. Al Nice yeah so. Tony Um, yeah summaria Tony Um? Tony Yeah, she spends it well. She pretty much she gets revenge. You know she's going to go get arrested so she spends it telling the news about Carl Lucas. Al Yeah, so wait a way to just name drop him right there. Tony Yeah, totally. Tony Backstabbing him too 'cause that file was supposed to exonerate him. Al Right, yeah it was. Tony Shocking, no one. Mariah Dillard, Backsteps Luke Cage so. Al What was her plan there? So, alright, so my assumption is that her plan was named drop Luke cage is Carl Lucas and then have someone that she knows or multiple people that she knows. Al Like call in to whatever authorities they need to call so that to say, hey, this escaped prisoner is here going by a different name, Luke Cage. He's even on TV, so I assume that was the plan. But at that point a little bit earlier she an shades we're talking an shades says that, Oh, He. Al He left the file back at pops so that they know that file is still there. The file that can completely exonerate Luke Cage. Al So like that's going to come back into play at some point, right? Tony No al, once that window shatters, the file also shatters. Al It's gone forever, OK? Tony You know, like files do. Al Yeah, that's true. Awhile ago a window accidentally broke and I lost my 2015 taxes. Tony Parable. Tony No, I mean during the distraction, why didn't she like shades go back in there an get the file? Al Yeah, exactly. I mean eventually all you have to do is just kind of hang out. Eventually. It'll be kind of empty, empty enough. I mean we see at the end when I forget the guys name Bobby Fish, Bobby fish. There we go. Al Bobby fish, like he sees the file 'cause he's the only one there. In pops is Barber shop. Al I mean, there could have been a point where there was literally no one, and then shades could have just gone in, grab the file and left. Tony Yeah, I mean everyone is looking at the Super fight. No one is looking about who's running into the building. Al Yeah, exactly, yeah that that's right. Even during that that portion of of the episode. Yeah yeah. Tony But then, um, she gets arrested by Misty and then, um, does a really good job acting like a naive person who has no idea what's happening. Tony Volume with Diamond Gym and stuff like that. Al I mean, I'll give her points for that, but I don't know. She. Yeah, I I. I got the impression that she was doing the whole don't say any facts type of. Al Type of thing that like a lawyer would would say like. Al You don't have to like show emotion like that. You know something or or you can show emotion. Kind of like you know something. But like if there's no proof then. Al That you can say whatever you want to to kind of get away with it, right? Like like exact like like what she was saying, right saying the wrong names of things. She wasn't saying that she knew diamondback but Al Like I, I felt like her tone was kind of in that sense of. Al Um? Al Like Oh yeah, obviously I did it, but you have no proof. Tony Yeah, well, I feel like that she switched to that when Misty came in so I was talking about when she was with Ridley before that. Al Oh, you're right. Yeah that's right. OK, 'cause once Misty went in she like Misty, was showing the evidence that they have an over. I had to immediately switch. OK yeah, you're right, yeah. Tony That that I do have that. No, it's it's just like as soon as Missy compressor she just like. Tony Her facade falls away. Al Yeah. Al Which good point? Going back to how Misty ends the episode? Just staring down Mariah at Harlem's paradise. Al Yeah, definitely not. Definitely don't want to be visible there 'cause you wanted to catch Mariah doing something? Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's like sending someone else like anyone else. Tony Yeah, maybe not. Luke Cage while he's in prison, but anyone else having them? Al Yeah, I mean Mariah probably doesn't even know who Claire is, so you know she could work. Al Other shades, I think, knows her. Tony So yeah, I think she's. I'm trying to think has Mariah ever interacted with Claire? I don't think they have. Al Yeah, I don't think so either OK. Tony See, that would work, but but Claire is busy learning karate. Al That's true. Tony Yeah. Al So just looking at a little bit from like the story arc perspective, Mariah started at the season. She was Councilwoman respected, right? Nothing, no stains on her record or anything like that. As far as we can tell. Al Um? Al An she ends it after a or in the middle. I guess of A. Al I can't remember the word controversy, right? Yes, yeah, with her cousin who died mysteriously and who had ties to being in. Al Fault with the numerous illegal dealings and then she ends up with Harlem's paradise. So now she's kind of I. I kind of wonder if part of that is her seeing herself as like, Alright, well now I guess I own Harlem. Tony Kind of yeah. Tony I think she does, especially how she, um, ends up with shades at the end. Al Yeah, I they also like they kind of showed switching out the the giant painting that they have in the office and I kind of wonder if that was the. Al The symbol is the way to symbolize that, yeah. Tony Yeah, I mean that's how I took it. Was that now biggie? Had one big Crown, now they have two crowns together. Al Oh her and shades that make sense yeah, yeah. Al And that's how I take it now. Now that we've talked about it, good. Tony And that was my only note for shades he killed Candace also. Al Yeah, well don't ask. Tony I know how stupid stupid canvas. Al Well, actually I'm I've got nothing against her on that right? She, she thought she was talking to, yeah? Al 2 Misty and Misty likes explicitly told her the week before, when when Misty gave her the phone. She said there's only one number in it. It's from that number, it's me like so yeah. Tony Trusted no yeah, I don't think I I maybe I spoke incorrectly. She wasn't stupid. She was just very naive. Tony And the fact that was like go by yourself to the police station or to this place where I'm going to meet you. Tony I wouldn't have trusted that. Al Oh, I see what you mean OK? Tony Yeah, so she's not stupid, but she was just very trusting. Tony We've gotten a lot of trouble in general. Al In this show, yeah, that's true. Speaker 5 So. Tony Alright, I think I'm done with the villains. Al OK yeah, same here. I mean that's I mean, those are the three main villains essentially. So yeah, Yeah, Alright. Let's take a quick break. Let's pay for some bills and that will basically wrap up the episode. Speaker 7 We're going to baskin-robbins. Would you like to try our mango fruit? Speaker 7 Blast injuries named a flavor after me so. Speaker 3 Stark raving hazelnuts spin. Speaker 3 Where your consideration? Speaker 3 Goodyear Speaker 5 Yeah. Al Alright Tony, Um, I know that you really hate it when I put you on the spot. So I'm just gonna ask you an easy question. Alright, what is the one question you ask your wife more than anything else? Tony What do you want for dinner? Al Exactly, I'm always asking my wife the same question. Where is my supersuit? It's a common problem, especially for those heroes and villains who turned invisible, but now our partners at super super suit locators have got the perfect product just for you. Introducing the all new. Al All around better 5G compatibel super suit location device. It's a small device that you attach to each piece of your super suit or one if it's just one giant thing. Al And then you can use an app to tell you where it is an you can even make it Ding in case you're one of those blind superheroes that needs to fight it with sound. Now you're probably thinking that this is the exact same thing as a tile sticker, but no, this is better for good reasons. Lots of good reasons. Al Use promo code MC you re like to get a free Cape with your first purchase. Tony I'm surprised this monster didn't sponsor enough, so you know that actually has Samuel Jackson in it. Al Yeah, I I'm surprised too, but they wanted this one because it's the 1st Super suit episode we've seen so. Tony Yeah, there have not been any super suits before this. I get. Yeah yeah. Tony All right, let's go onto the guy in the chair or the nurse in the apartment. Speaker 4 I think that's what I want to do. Speaker 6 Sell people. Speaker 3 Abilities. Speaker 8 No no, no no no, not those three wombats no way. Al Yeah, I guess yeah, that's right. Claire's, the only one we've got here all right. What have you got for Claire? Tony Was feeling nervous when she gave that pep talk to Candace about being a strong and doing good for people that Candace would go out and do something like try to save Luke. She didn't. She went out for a different reason. Tony But I thought I was going backfire. Al I mean, yeah, you're right, it did backfire differently, but yeah. Al Yeah, um, I mean she she was telling I mean it worked. You know she was telling Candace to, you know, be strong. You know everyone's gotta do their part. Her part is staying alive long enough to put Mariah in jail, but that that part didn't workout. Tony So what do you feel about like before we recording you we were talking about the show arrow. What do you think about Luke Cage and also arrow? Did this changing who the characters end up with romantically? Tony Cousin Um arrow he's supposed to be with Laurel, but ends up with Felicity. In this on Luke Cage in the comics marries and has a child with Jessica Jones. Tony What's your opinion on him switching up? Al Um, I honestly I'm fine with it. Like like when I first watched this. You know back back in the the crazy times of 2016 you know I I was still kind of. I don't want to call it like a a purist, you know, for the comics, like Oh, the show has to be just like it. But like. Al I at the time I wanted like the big stuff to still be around and so it I had assumed that OK he will eventually end up with Jessica, but that will be later, maybe in a in a separate season. Or maybe something will happen in defenders 'cause at the time we knew that was going to happen. So you know, I I had no problem with it now. However, I'm I care. Al Even less, and I think the biggest thing was Captain Marvel. 'cause in that movie that was like the the biggest change of the scrolls, right? The what we know from the comics and you know other Marvel related things is that the scrolls. Al You know, really, you know, evil racer evil. You know in quotes because you know they're always at war and that kind of stuff that were with the Kree. They've been a big part of some of the comics storylines, and in Captain Marvel we see that that's not at all how they are. Al An you know the the ones that get names are also the cool ones. We like them so so pretty much after that now. Like Yeah Alright the I I trust. Al For the most part so far, um, you know, I Trust Disney, and the decisions that they're making around the MCU, so if they change something, OK, cool, go for it, whatever. Maybe they'll change that in the future eventually. Al Yeah, eventually something will change in in a story, right? Yeah I, I keep saying this about comics. We have decades of story line here. So like I don't remember what it was, but I was reading one comic and there was one character who was talking about previously being married to someone else like Oh, I didn't even know. Al That was ever a thing. Al Oh, who was it? Al Mockingbird mockingbird used to be married to Hawkeye at one point. Al So yeah, anan, you know now. Al Mockingbird because of agents of shield there was this whole thing with her and Lance Hunter in the comics to being a separate thing. So you know, like the shows will also. Al Uh. Al Modify the story that they they put in the comics, but what I'm saying is it doesn't matter to me. I I don't target it. It's it's a story cool I'm enjoying this thing that I'm watching so yeah. Tony OK, that's fair. Yeah I I don't care either. But for like different reasons 'cause just like I feel the chemistry between Claire and Luke much better than I feel. The chemistry between Jessica and Luke. So it's like I'm. Tony I have never had a problem separating different mediums like when they adapt something for a movie. Oh yeah, and people were like Oh my God, you ruined my childhood didn't ruin my childhood. My challenge is still there. I can still go back to the book. Al Yeah they it's not like they used a Time Machine and went back. Tony Yeah, yeah yeah, I was like I. Tony Cannot read the cursed child ever again. Tony Well yeah, but yeah the play yeah yeah yeah. Tony Yeah, so it's just like. Tony Yeah, it doesn't bug me. I know it bugs a lot of people when they change stuff like this. Al Yeah yeah, yeah. Tony Yeah, and um speaking about the chemistry that was like the most passionate kiss I've ever seen on TV. Tony Been looking Claire. Al Oh Man, I should probably should pay attention. I I I don't know it in my mind like it's a kiss. Alright moving on. Tony No, it was like. Tony It was like a good like 25 second kiss. We should just stop the show and watch them make out for a little bit like wow OK. Tony Well, the FBI agents are just letting him do that. OK, all right? I guess, not not that big a deal. OK, yeah. Al I mean in their mind they're still taking him, they're like, well, it's your last little bit of freedom have have a minute. Tony They do offer him Dunkin' Donuts. Al At the end, that's right. Tony All in all, those were cool FBI agents. There was just like, yeah, I guess we gotta do this. Al Yeah, that's true. They they still did their job, but they're like they're at least trying to be nice. Like, Yeah, you know what? We've heard the stories. You seem like a cool guy. Sorry about this. We don't actually know what you're arrested for. We just know we have to take you. Al Yep, 'cause I mean even we don't as the audience right? We we don't actually know. Tony We don't actually know what the the crime was OK. Al Yeah, he stole 5 pennies from the pick up. Any leave a penny? Tony That's it, yeah, he was framed for that Frank. He's even do it. Tony Alright, I mean everything else with Claire. We kind of talked about already in reference to other things. Al Yeah, yeah, I've got nothing else like my my points are all gone, yeah. Tony Yeah, and the same with the 12% of the plan. I had two notes that we already talked about exact same here. So alright alright. Tony Um so Tony. I don't remember. Do do we rate the episode or the season or both? I'm gonna say both just to cover our bases 'cause I'm not sure and you got you know what all your listeners you can go back to like when we finish Daredevil and we would have these exact same conversation. Speaker 7 Going to baskin-robbins? Speaker 7 Would you like to try our mango fruit? Speaker 7 Blast injuries named the flavor after me so. Speaker 3 Stark raving hazelnuts. Speaker 7 For your consideration. Speaker 3 Goodyear Al Alright, well then in that case Tony how do you want to rate the? Well do you want to choose the choice for the season or the episode? I'll choose for the episode? Well, I've got some for both of them. Oh OK. Well then do both. Tony How many oh damn, I lost it. Tony Right, well I have something like alright. Well, how many files are you going to give this episode? Al Uh, the episode, um? Al I'll give it a four, you know. It started off kind of cool. You know you've got a cool super fight between 2 characters. It's really nice to see Luke Cage really any hero like let loose, right? Al Um? Al I. Al Am slightly annoyed that again the final enemy was exactly the same as the hero there in terms of powers. That kind of stuff. So glad that that starts to branch out a little bit more in the other stuff that will be out or we're about to start talking about for the MCU, but the episode itself, you know, once that big fight ended things just kind of went on. Al Into a did a demo dummy demagogue denim our denim a Alright whatever whatever, I'm just gonna keep calling it demigod. Tony So you know, Hercules? Al So so basically once we got, you know to that point, things really just kind of it was well, how I remember the the season as a whole going of, you know we get a lot of storyline but it's kind of slow, so it's it's really just the wrap up. So now I'll give it a four 'cause I liked it more than the rest of the season. 'cause it was a nice wrap up of things. Tony Oh, OK. Tony I disagree with you. I would give this a 2 1/2. Oh OK, yeah um an the the half or the the reason it's even that high is I like look speech and. Tony Um Willis Stryker gets beat down. I mean, I think a lot of this episode was pretty much recapping the previous episodes, like when they were telling the story of what happened and feel like, yeah, we know what happens. We just watched 12 episodes of this. Tony The fight to me was underwhelming, I mean. Tony I yeah, I just I did not enjoy this episode. I like I enjoyed like a good 75% of the season. But this episode is just really brought it down for me. Al OK, that's that's Fair. I mean it, it wasn't set up to be a really good Fanelli, right? It was. It was kind of just set up to finish off the fight, specifically with Diamondback, and maybe with Mariah and shades. But you know, as we see, OK, that doesn't happen in Alright. Shades go off and do their thing. Al Um? Al So yeah, you're right. Plus, it will really mostly focus on the main character, Luke Cage we got. We got a lot of other stuff for other characters being angry about stuff, right? We got. Al The whole thing with with Misty upset that she's not able to arrest Mariah and that kind of stuff. Tony Yeah, I feel this is all there was. A lot of setup for season 2 an for the defenders and a little bit for iron fist. Al Oh, just the one flyer at the end. Tony Yeah OK, this is a little bit, but yeah it was there. Tony I'm al, but for the whole season, how many bullet hold sweaters would you give this season? Al A season as a whole, I'm going to go. Al Pretty low also. I'm going to say 2 1/2 actually. Al It's it's mostly because you know, I remember I remember when I first watched it, I kept thinking, OK, this is a Netflix MCU Show. It's it's a little slow at times, a lot or slow it a lot of times. Al There's a lot of back and forth, like remembering being a kid, or you know stuff in the past and then now we're doing the now time stuff, which can be fine, but it just happens so often. Al There's not a lot of action that's going on, it's it's, you know, very story driven character driven, which I will say is actually interesting, right when when the main hero? Al Doesn't use their powers because they can't like they use them to be able to achieve their goal, but they can't do it to actually stop the villains for you know, the things that they're doing 'cause they want to do it the right way. I I do kind of like that concept, but that keeps popping up, but I think I told you the thing I like. Al Could like I was upset her not upset. The thing that I I remembered reading a little was the like 3 episodes of Luke Cage just not being able to do anything 'cause he was just shot and just trying to survive and that was just so drawn out and it just I I remember him. Yeah not looking forward to that so. Al Yeah, on the bright side I know season 2 is better, so fingers crossed that I remember that one little bit better. So yeah 2 1/2 for me. Tony Yeah, I mean I'm similar. I'll give it a three a little bit because with the exception of striker I love the characters in this, but it was drawn out. Tony I agree with you about that, um. Tony Yeah, I just I wasn't compelled in the story once Cornell died. Tony And that's the big problem with this season. Tony I'm just like I'm. Tony Again, I'm excited I I like see. Luckily I like season two more. They have a stronger villain which again the big downfall and they don't spin there. At least I don't remember them spinning their wheels as much. Tony But Yeah, at least every character except for Willis was a very strong character, which. Tony Yeah, um, I think like Jessica Jones and Iron Fist both struggle with that. Like I like Jessica in I I mean Jessica Jones and I like. Tony Um? Tony Malcolm, but everyone else. I couldn't care less about. Tony Yeah, and then yeah yeah. And then with with iron fist. We're not there yet, but it's all about calling wing and I don't care about anyone else. Al Yeah, that's true. Yeah yeah. Tony But yeah, but yeah. I mean I'll give a little higher 'cause I love these characters. I'd like to see, especially Mike Coulter and Simone Missick back in the MCU proper. I don't care about anyone else. Al But yeah, even Daredevil. Al No, I'm from this show. Oh OK gotcha yeah OK yeah. Tony Yeah, I mean Oh Anne Claire, but I think she's in all these colors should be in everything every single show. Al Cat will someday. She'll be in agents of shield. Al This is recording we've got like 8 episodes left in this. Tony I think I. Tony Like the listeners, Melissa is know whether or not. Al That's alright. Tony But yeah, I think I think I'm good. Talking bout Luke Cage until we see him in the defenders. Al Yeah, sounds good to me, so just kind of wrap it up everyone just a heads up on our schedule. We do have that published online. It is not up to date that's on me. I'll try to remember to update that soon, but next week we're going to start talking about agents of shield season 3. Al We're going to have six weeks of that, and then we'll take a break to do 3 episodes of Doctor Strange, so we'll get back to a movie. Then we'll get back to agents of shield. And if you're really looking forward to us getting back to the Netflix side of the MCU, we're going to start iron fist back up 19 weeks from now, which would be February 1st, 2021. Al So in the mean time, please join us next week when we will be talking about agents of shield season three episode one, and you can also in the meantime remember to follow us on Twitter. We're at MC_Rewind an subscribe to the show an you know auto download it because I think I think it's cooler if you'd auto download podcasts instead of. Al Yeah, listening to them on demand and maybe not listening to them and maybe not giving that show download. Al An anyway, this has been the Marvel Cinematic rewind signing off. Tony Have a marvelous. Speaker 8 Day sort of like the master builder. When I make my way home you know my seeds. Speaker 5 You know my team. Speaker 8 The beat is sinister. Primo makes you relax. I'm like the minister when I be lacing the wax, I'll be bringing Salvation through the way that I wrap, and you know, and I know I'm nice like that. Work through worldly problems. I got the healing power when the Mikes within my reach I'm feeling more power stealing.
