Hello and welcome my friends, this is Vinyl-O-Matic and I am Your Old Pal Will. We are into episode 40 of season 4 and we are solidly into singles with a-sides that begin with the letter M. Not only that, but we have not one, not two, but three... three! singles from the year 1970, like this one. Hi, that was a pretty fun set. We got things started off with Three Dog Night and their rendition of Randy Newman's "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)", which was orignally recorded by Eric Burdon but these three amigos made it popular with their groovy interpretation. We followed that up with a split single on Partisan Records from 2015. The a-side is San Francisco's Burning Curtains and their catchy tune "Mannequin Lullaby". The flipside features Rhode Island band Happiness and "Knowm" spelled like known but with an m on the end. Next up, we have a single from Deerhoof's 2007 album Friend Opportunity. Indeed, we just heard the classic Chuck Berry Chess Records single "Maybelline" backed with "Wee Wee Hours". Evidently "Wee Wee Hours" was one of the songs on Berry's audition tape submitted to Leonard Chess. That is from 1995, Chess Records 1604 for those of you playing along at home. And if you cast your minds back you will recall that we got that set started of with a super fine picture disc single from Deerhoof featuring artwork by David Shrigley. This is when they were a trio between when Chris Cohen left and Ed Rodriguez joined up. An excellent release from Kill Rock Stars from 2007. Before we continue with the music, let me remind you that KWTF is supported by listeners like yourselves. Every contribution, big or small, recurring or otherwise helps us out immensely. PLease visit kwtf(dot)net for more information about how you can help today. Next up, we have a sizzling single from a Nicholas Roeg film. Heck yeah. That was a single from Detroit's The Dynamics from 1963 on Big Top Records. We heard the a-side "Misery", which hep cats will recognize as the basis for an early Who recording "Zoot Suit", along with the b-side "I'm the Man". Good for you. Prior to that we heard some hot hot slide guitar by Ry Cooder accompanying Mick Jagger with his 1970 single "Memo from Turner" which was featured in the Nicholas Roeg film "Performance". This track also features Gene Parsons on drums (of all things), and surprise... Randy Newman on piano. And now for something completely Moog-y. All righty, that last set started off with the 1997 Stereolab single "Miss Modular" and the flipside "Allures" on Duophonic Records. We also heard from former Papa John Phillips and his 1970 single "Mississippi" and plaintive b-side "April Anne", both from his album John, the Wolf King of L.A. This concludes our program.
