Hello and welcome to Vinyl-O-Matic. I am Your Old Pal Will here to guide you on our journey through singles with a-sides that begin with the letter O as in Oscar as well as the letter P as in Papa. We start off with a clerical mix up on my part. Yes, that's right. Your Old Pal Will flipped his a-side and his b-side on this next one, but so it goes. Instrumentals for everyone! In that last set, we heard got things rolling with Booker T and the MG's "Over Easy" and "Hang 'Em High". Of course, I should have known that "Hang 'Em High" would have been the a-side. It did reach #9 on the Hot 100 as well as #35 on the R&B charts in 1968. That was on Stax Records, naturally. We followed that up with some post-punk squeedily honk from Pigbag from 1981 on Y Records, the title referring to the James Brown Classic. Coincidentally enough, we'll be hearing some actual James Brown in just a few songs. Coming up next, Art of Noise asks what happens when you cross paranoia with insomnia? O hai, it's me, Your Old Pal Will. We just heard DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince reassuring us that parents just do not understand. That is on Jive Records from 1988. That was preceded by Art of Noise and their 1986 single "Paranoimia", that happens to have the illustrious cyber figment Max Headroom on the flipside version. Interested listeners can shake the internet to find the Channel 4 tv film Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future, or The Max Headroom Show, or the Gibsonian US tv series Max Headroom, and even Mr. Headroom as spokesentity for New Coke (no really). Before we continue with the music, let me remind you that now more than ever KWTF needs your assistance. We are an all-volunteer non-profit community radio station that is dependent on contributions for listeners just like yourselves. Point your browser in the direction of kwtf(dot)net(slash)donate and help us out with whatever amount you can. Up next, why do you like soul food? Welcome back. If you cast your minds back, you will recall that we got that set started off with The JB's and they're all killer no filler single "Pass the Peas" and "Hot Pants Road" on People Records from 1972. We followed that up with Fresh & Only guitarist Wymond Miles and his 2013 single "Passion Plays" and the flipside "Batwing" which is a cover of The Terminals track 1 side 1 of their debut EP. That is on Sacred Bones Records. Remember last episode when I mentioned that Will Oldham briefly recorded as Will Oldham between Palace and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy? Well, here's a single from that very brief period. Hurray! Japanese disco from the dynamic duo of Mei and Kei aka Pink Lady. We heard the a-side "Peppaa Keibu" backed with "Kanpai Ojousan". "Peppa Keibu" translates to Inspector Pepper. In case you are wondering, Peppa Keibu is in the key of D Major, which I know thanks to the sleeve notes. Thanks again to loyal Vinyl-O-Matic listener Trane for this one. We also heard from Will Oldham and his 1997 single "Patience" on Drag City/Palace Records DC118/PR16 for those of you playing along at home.
