Hello and welcome to another episode of Vinyl-O-Matic. I am You Old Pal Will. This week we continue our journey through singles with a-sides beginning with the letter P as in Papa. Let's get things rolling here with a promo single that is naturally so nice, we'll have to play it twice. And remember, if you're drinking don't drive and if you're driving, don't drink. He was saying "Funk Me", I swear. That's what it says on the flipside of Marvin Gaye's 1981 TAMLA single "Praise". Turns out disco gospel was a thing. And we got that set started off with one of my favorite Lou Reed singles "The Power of Positive Drinking" from his 1980 album Growing Up in Public. For some reason, this song totally failed to chart. I guess 1980 just wasn't that into Lou. Next up, what happens when you put King Khan and Bloodshot Bill in a studio together? You get Tandoori Knights! Well all right. You made it! If you cast your minds way back to the top of that last set, you will recall that we heard from Tandoori Knights and their 2010 Norton Records single "Pretty Please" backed with one of the finest flipsides ever, "Bucketful". That was followed up with John Peel's favorite band The Fall and a lovely little Christmas gift from 2003 on Action Records. As I am sure you will remember, we heard "(We Wish You) a Protein Christmas", "(We Are) Mod Mock Goth" (sounds very complicated to me but kind of makes sense), "(Birtwistle's) Girl in Shop" and "Recovery Kit 2 #". Merry-uh Christmas-uh in May. Before we continue with the music, let me remind you that KWTF is an all-volunteer, listener-supported, community radio station. Every dollar we receive from you goes a very long way. Please point your browser in the direction of kwtf(dot)net(slash)donate and give what you can today. Next up, a promo single of a different sort. Yeah, how's that for Pacific Northwest indie rock from the early 90s? We just heard a split on Rave Records featuring Skin Yard performing "Psychoriflepowerhypnotized" on wonderful KDVS, backed with Loveslug's "Loser Bar". That was preceded by Sonic Youth's promo single from Daydream Nation, "Providence" which featured Thurston Moore on piano, Mike Watt on answering machine, and an overdriven Peavey Roadmaster. And now, an iconic nugget. Whoah, deja vu! That set kicked off with Count Five and their 1966 classic on Double Shot Records "Psychotic Reaction" and the b-side "They're Gonna Get You". Right on the back of that, we heard a cover of that very single as performed by Positively Thirteen O'Clock and a flipside entitled "13 O'Clock Theme for Psychotics". Believe it or not, that was released on Hannah-Barbera Records. Go figure. This concludes our program for today. Join me, won't you?
