O hai, it's me, Your Old Pal Will back again with Yet Still Even More singles with a-sides beginning with the letter W as in Whiskey. If you'd like to play along at home, point your browser in the direction of vinylomatic(dot)com(slash)s04e70 for this episode's show notes. Without further ado, let's get this Vinyl-O-Matic voyage underway with a nice sunny tune. Or is it? That last one right there? That is pretty much my dream split single. We heard Deerhoof with special guest Marc Ribot on the a-side, bringing us a reinterpretation of "Who Sleeps Only Dreams". The flipside has Ceramic Dog, featuring Shahzad Ismaily on bass, Ches Smith on drums, and yes, Marc Ribot on guitar. That track is entitled "Hide with Me". This single was released by Northern Spy Records in 2014. Prior to that, we heard Velvet Underground with their Loaded, Lou Reed penned single "Who Love's the Sun" featuring Doug Yule on vocals. And yes, it was a promo single where we actually do hear a little bit of difference between the mono mix and the stereo mix. Next up, no doubt, you have been asking yourself, "Will, what is the deal? It's been a few episodes since we've heard The Archies." Well, gentle listener, Your Old Pal Will is all about fan service, especially when bubblegum is involved. Welcome back to Vinyl-O-Matic. If you cast your minds back, you will recall that we got that last set started off with The Archies and their 1970 single on Kirshner Records, "Who's Your Baby" backed with "SeƱorita Rita". With a little bit of a gospel feel on the a-side, and a little bit of a Latin feel on the b-side, it's a wonder it only made it to number 40 on the Hot 100 charts. That was followed up El DeBarge and siblings bringing us their 1985 slow jam "Who's Holding Donna Now?" and their funkier b-side "Be My Lady". A pretty successful outing on Gordy Records that made it all the way to number 6 in 1985. And now for the musical question, who is that girl? Now that was a heckuva set. We just heard a 7-inch record that came with Chemical Imbalance Issue #7 from 1990 that pretty much encapsulates my early 20s musical interests. After the delightful Great Shakes radio spot by The Who, we had the illustrious Bongwater covering Soft Machine's "Why Are We Sleeping?", and Uncle Wiggly with a song called "With My". On the flipside, we had Dean Wareham in transition from Galaxy 500 to Luna with his rendition of Beat Happening's "Indian Summer", which was followed up by Beat Happening's "Foggy Eyes", and rounding things out were The Tinklers, and their delightful cover of Tommy James and the Shondells smash hit, "I Think We're Alone Now". Phew. And before that, we had the most excellent Eurythmics single "Who's That Girl?" from 1983. If you haven't seen the video for this song recently, or ever, you should check it out. You won't be disappointed. Let's move things along with some early aughties Bay Area garage rock from The Rock and Roll Adventure Kids! Wowzers. We made it! That last set began with Rock and Roll Adventure Kids Marcos, Amy and Oscar bringing us a live set of "Wildman" "She's a Dork and I Like Her" and of course "Twist and Shout", released on Soul Not Style Records in 2001. That was followed up with a split of Shellac covers by Great Falls handling "Wingwalker" and the always amazing Thou slamming us with "Prayer to God". Mighty heavy goodness from Hell Comes Home records. And thus we reach the end of this transmission. Join me again next week as we continue our journey through singles with a-side that begin with the letter W as in Whiskey, and we might even make it to singles with a-sides that begin with the letter Y as in... I don't know. I guess I'll have to look it up on the NATO phonetic alphabet chart. Tune in next week to find out!
