00:01.55 Leonard Hello I'm your host tonight Leonard and I'm joined by Matt Matt how are you doing. 00:11.58 Matthew I'm doing great I'm excited for this one our fighter and our bart are off doing their own thing. So it's the necromancer and Artificer's turn to have some fun on our own. 00:19.26 Leonard Oh no, that's that's and that's that's actually fairly accurate I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm minorly upset being called out that hard this early into this episode. But yeah, that's fine. That's cool. 00:35.76 Matthew Well you you brought this on yourself like this was your choice. It's night of the creeps. It's all about like crazy undead and I mean come on it fits yeah and aliens. 00:45.66 Leonard Aliens and and and and and a ah and a cop thriller. 00:52.27 Matthew Yep and an Axe Murderer and ah. 00:55.31 Leonard Ah, and and legitimately clever fun writing for a 19 aliens creature feature a 1980 s aliens creature feature. 01:04.94 Matthew Yeah, and 1980 s yeah, it felt like this this this director Fred Decker yeah oh yeah, tonight we're talking about 9 of the creeps. Ah directed by Fred Decker written by Fred Decker um 01:20.24 Matthew And ah he was extremely aware of everything going on in in these kind of films at the time and for like a movie made it Eighty 6 right? Um this yeah the production value on this is great. Um I just when they did like the. 01:29.42 Leonard 86 01:39.38 Matthew Ah, time period change. It's well I mean we can. We can get into it but it starts as one film and then becomes another film and then becomes a third film. Yeah. 01:43.71 Leonard If and then becomes another film and then reverts back to the secondary film that it started has yep yep. 01:53.41 Matthew Yeah, and they're all shot differently and they're all shot competently and they are the kind of film that they need to be and it's it's it's a ride. It's a lot of fun. Um I watch this with my partner and their favorite thing about I mean I don't want to call this schlocky because this wasn't. Super like it wasn't low budget schlay. It was still goofy but the best part about these films is you don't know where they're going and yeah, that's this film to a t I had like I'm like oh this is probably going to happen and that is like oh it did not pan out the way I thought I was Goingnna pan out. 02:12.46 Leonard No. 02:17.85 Leonard E. 02:30.20 Matthew At all. Um, so yeah, it was ah it was pretty good. So that yeah again, this is my first time seeing this but this is an old favorite yours right? Leonard. 02:40.40 Leonard Oh I have been watching this film since I was 13 when the sci-fi channel knew how to spell the word scifi. Ah before it became the cyfi channel um. 02:52.41 Matthew Ah, the good old days. Yeah. 02:55.74 Leonard Yeah, this was a frequent watch on on that network and um I'm really glad to revisit this movie after so long and realized that I actually had decent chase as a child. 03:09.48 Matthew A. 03:12.32 Leonard And knew like what a competently made film was because I was very terrified that I was going to come back to this. It's like oh no, this is like terrible schlock and it's garbage. But no, this is a. Very smart competently made foot film that nobody remembers. 03:29.41 Matthew Yeah, it was lovingly made and I'm really surprised that it's cult status isn't a little higher. Um, and I think we can. There's a couple things I can point to as to why but we'll get. We'll get there when we get there. But other than that. 03:35.36 Leonard Yes. 03:44.46 Leonard A. 03:48.10 Matthew Ah, than like 1 or 2 nitpicks I think this this is fun I'd watch this film again. It was fun. It was silly definitely thing to watch like in a big group too just because yeah, there's a bunch of like when that first dude's head just blows open. It's like it's great. But. 03:54.72 Leonard Whoop. Yes. 04:07.85 Matthew I was like oh that's how that's going to work. 04:08.89 Leonard That's right, a lot a lot of dudes heads get blown open in this film and also a zombie gets a shotgun like buckshot to the face in a glorious explosion as well. 04:20.67 Matthew Yes. 04:25.58 Leonard Also there are aliens just to reiterate that this movie knows what it's doing and. 04:26.44 Matthew Um, yeah, aliens zombies snobs versus slobs. But yeah, it has everything that the 80 s had all kind of distilled and mixed together into this film. it's it's it's really good. 04:42.36 Leonard Yes, but also kind of knew how like um, vaguely shitty the people of the 80 s were at the time as well. We'll get to that. It's called the Chad bus I call it the Chad buzz. 04:43.88 Matthew Yeah. 04:51.95 Matthew Oh God I Don't think we survived that bus crash code. That's. 05:04.96 Leonard That's a what I also thought of and B I was like oh I'm really glad that they didn't try to humanize any of these characters and that that that they're literally just fodder for the ah brain parasite Zombie slugs. 05:06.50 Matthew A. 05:21.26 Matthew Yeah, they yeah I thought I thought the end there was going to be like a dance scene with all of the everyone was a zombie or something like I'm like ah that's got to be coming. But yeah, sorry, go ahead I cut you off. 05:23.11 Leonard Ah, also can can can. 05:34.17 Leonard Oh I was just going to say um I would love to um, have the opportunity to pick. Ah James Gunn's brain. And just find out how much of this movie influenced leather. 05:52.54 Matthew You know what we were talking about the same thing when we were watching it. It's got slither has has has this film in mind when yeah when it was made because just like all those little leeches just flying around everywhere making that very specific noise. Um. 06:01.76 Leonard Um. 06:09.43 Leonard Yep. 06:09.58 Matthew Yeah, there was even like 1 scene like in a bunch of people taking showers and I'm like oh okay, they're going to do the slither thing. No that never happened but it could have. 06:19.68 Leonard Yeah, ah yeah, they're going to Retro Actively do the slither thing you said about this movie from the a it was a lot fun. 06:29.11 Matthew A I don't know what could happen here. It was a lot of fun all right? Yeah, ah. Let's hop into this with um, one of the greatest openings film has ever seen with these little Alien Butt cheeks running around in this spaceship. 06:45.33 Leonard Um, and the the the the the fetus ah Yoko taro aliens running around doing an action scene. 06:52.27 Matthew Yeah, they are little yoga color. Yeah, they were like Buff E T's they were the same height but they had like musculature and like you know, ah running around ah yelling about stuff. Did we get the date at this time I think we did. 06:57.45 Leonard Yes, yes. 07:09.55 Matthew I Remember that's in a minute. 07:11.80 Leonard I Think we only get the date when we pan down when we ah go from the Alien Sequids to earth. 07:18.61 Matthew Right? Yeah, so this is film like like like an 80 s alien film there's like steam everywhere. Everything is like gray vents and greats. There's lasers. Ah, they're trying to stop like. 1 faction of aliens is trying to stop another faction of these little aliens from doing something we can't really tell what it is until we see ah one of these aliens who has kind of blanked out white eyes shoot a canister into space. Um, and then it just cuts away from them. 07:44.48 Leonard Yes. 07:51.67 Matthew And camera goes down to earth and it's 1959 um and it becomes yeah wasn't but well specifically it's very white I don't think I saw a black person on screen. 07:58.20 Leonard Yep, it's black and white because color wasn't invented until 1960 08:09.27 Leonard Um. 08:10.72 Matthew Ah, for a while in this film until we get to the future. But um, ah yeah, it's yeah it looks it looks like Pleasantville that that isn't not the one that was all black and white. Um, so. 08:14.58 Leonard Just like reality and films. 08:22.73 Leonard Yes. 08:25.62 Matthew But yeah, so the the frame rate is high but it's still black and white. So It has that weird sort of in-between feel. Ah, but it's this great tracking shot. Um I'm not even sure if there's a cut here just like over this campus and ah. There's a yeah, there's a couple cuts because there's a girl on the phone talking to her friend Muffy about how some guy is a cop and he's no good and you shouldn't date the cop and and ah yep, and a guy comes to pick up a girl for a date. Um. 08:49.42 Leonard Um, yep. 08:58.66 Matthew And they keep turning off radio reports of a criminally insane man on the loose because it. 09:04.70 Leonard I Love oh my God So so there's also an aspect of this film which is like oh this is also a very adult ah episode of. Are you afraid of the dark. 09:15.91 Matthew Um, right? Which which was just like it was I didn't know what to think because like within the first ten minutes of this film I'm confronted with these things that look like crane and brainiac had a baby and then. It's immediately to let's go to make out point and I'm like what the fuck is happening here. Yeah whoa. 09:33.64 Leonard What did Leonard do what did he say? what do he bring in it. What did he breathe into reality but he none of this makes sense. It's all garbage I don't like it. It's weird, nothing ties together I'm upset. 09:45.94 Matthew Ah, yeah, but ah, we we get some backstory here just like a little bit. This girl is like on a date with a guy I think I can't even remember the beginning people's names here. Um. 10:03.23 Leonard Yeah, they almost actually don't kind of matter. Um, ah they they don't. 10:06.97 Matthew They don't honestly ah except for the one character a cop comes up to the car and says hey don't make out here. Somebody's on the loose and then it turns out the cop dated The girl in the car. Um. 10:20.38 Leonard Ah, thought he was dating the girl the car but clearly they weren't she she tells the cop to go home as if he has the option to do So as a cop. 10:22.86 Matthew Thought he was dating you know? Yeah yeah, didn't didn't get that message. 10:35.35 Matthew Ah, um, and he's like you guys need to go home. There's a maniac on the loose. Um, and that's when a comet falls. Ah the ah Jock driving the car is like let's go find that that's the brightest star in the sky. Um, they drive off to the woods. Yeah. 10:51.27 Leonard Gonna make my wish. 10:53.92 Matthew Wolf and ah they drive off to the woods to find it. Ah jock hos out of the car. There's really loud music playing even though the girl's like freaked out. Um and then it's just like kind of a slow build scene of this jock finding. 11:12.99 Matthew Ah, canister that was launched out of the spaceship intercut with the woman in the car being snuck up on by a dude in a hospital robe holding a fire axe. Yeah, and I think ah it ends when the 2 breaks. 11:22.66 Leonard See yep. 11:31.22 Matthew And a worm shoots into the the new boyfriend's mouth and then hard cut to 1986 11:40.73 Leonard And then it's 1986 and I'm like this is I'm like ah yes, this movie was made for me I know I only know these 2 time periods as a child watching network television in California. It's only the Andy Griffiths show and coal jack the night stalker for me. 12:00.34 Matthew It's um, it's almost as if boomers were in charge of media for too long and there were only a couple periods of time that were important to them. 12:05.10 Leonard And and Ed then ended up making weird creepy assholes like me that like movies like this. 12:17.00 Matthew Yeah, ah, um, so yeah, every eighty s trope is on display here. Ah like all of them. Um the types of nerds and jocks and like this weird class separation thing that eighty s films. Love. Love to like showcase. Um, it's happening here. This is Pledge week at a frat or at several frats. Um, ah so there's like big house parties Happening. Yep. 12:33.46 Leonard Yes. 12:42.22 Leonard Yes, ah, ah, filmed that at Ucl a but I I know as a California native I know that I I've seen all of these buildings multiple times on my way to gay bars. Like west hollywood. So. 12:56.40 Matthew Yeah, but yeah, so the street is just like there's like toilet paper everywhere because sure and like you know the place is just trash. There's parties everywhere people drinking outside. Um and this is where we meet. Our 2 leads kind of for the beginning half of the film. Um, it's that so the storytelling structure here is a little strange. But yes Chris Romero and and his friend jchooper which. 13:19.87 Leonard Yes, Chris Romero 13:33.28 Matthew Like man like JC is Chris doesn't say okay so I have been referring to them as what the detective later in this refers to them as spanky and alfalfa because I loathe these characters. 13:48.21 Leonard Yes, really. 13:51.14 Matthew Um, one of them is a gormless worm and one of them is a gormless worm that doesn't shut up I Just I. 13:58.94 Leonard Oh that's real Oh man, that's that's really funny. Um I I. 14:00.46 Matthew There I think that they're the reason why like this this wasn't as cult status as as it could be because I just yeah I just I don't know man like that speaker piece go ahead but out of everybody I Love everyone else in this film. 14:09.22 Leonard Really. 14:16.23 Leonard Okay, so. 14:20.00 Matthew These 2 guys not doing it for me. 14:23.63 Leonard I like Chris ah because he like hey guess what I'm not um angry at like the um heroic archetype um, you know the hero with the thousand faces. Um, and he's like not a face. 14:32.94 Matthew And here. 14:41.00 Leonard That you would consider heroic even though he does eventually become vaguely heroic. Um, and then I love j c because he's his gay. Best friend who's absolutely in love with him and Chris is ah stupid and doesn't realize it. 14:45.50 Matthew He gets there. Yeah. 15:00.49 Matthew You know what? That's a very fair read. That's a very fair read. Ah yeah I should have known by the the Hawaiian shirts man like I should have known but it's. 15:00.76 Leonard Um, that. 15:04.10 Leonard That that's why I actually like these characters do the the the tap the tape to him at the end which we'll get to I'm like all right, it's the 80 s and there was. 15:19.10 Matthew Yes, um. 15:22.81 Leonard Always there was like almost always a gay. Best friend who sacrificed himself to make sure that heterosexuality continued. Yeah, exactly my love for my love for you who will. 15:31.90 Matthew We kind of propagate the species here. Ah. 15:39.80 Leonard Bring Forth new life into this world. 15:44.26 Matthew Yeah, so um and he ah it's I just feel like he could have been written in a way that the jokes weren't cloying I think I think is the big issue. Maybe it was a writing issue or whatever. 15:47.69 Leonard Here. 15:59.78 Matthew But I can. 16:00.21 Leonard No I'm got I hey guess what I'm goingnna I'm gonna ah let you in on a little secret. That's how um, ah gay friend comedy writing just was in the 80 s just kind of say it surprise. Yeah yep. 16:10.28 Matthew Yeah, no, you're not wrong. Absolutely not wrong. Yeah, how how dare we see them as cool. How dare we. 16:17.24 Leonard Yeah, that yeah I mean you can't be he he has to walk with crutches. Yeah. 16:26.87 Matthew Yeah, which like when I learned it was gonna be like a zombie nightmare kind of situation I was like oh that's gonna be a really interesting twist. Ah that like either we're gonna see him animate and be dead and not need them or we're gonna see. 16:38.50 Leonard Yeah huh. 16:41.63 Matthew Or we're going to see like a chase scene where he's like stay you know keep going I'll stay back or something like that and I was like okay, that's that's kind of a cool twist and you actually don't see people with disabilities in horror movies that often, especially this era so it was It was pretty interesting. 16:49.37 Leonard Ah. 16:59.60 Leonard But we got the the middle ground between the 2 which is a bio shock. Ah you know tape about yeah, an audiolog about how he did in fact, run from the things he ran for himself. 17:03.79 Matthew Yeah, audio log? yeah. 17:13.19 Matthew Yeah, that I I feel like I don't know because at that at that point I mean we can. We can talk about it when we get there but I feel like for some reason they only had him for like two days and they wrote him out because he dies off screen. He leaves a monologue and like. 17:15.59 Leonard I love you Nick. 17:30.76 Leonard Yes, yes, he also takes ah and he also takes some of the things out hey guess what in in it if this movie gets was remade at the it like right now he survives and then shows up at the end. 17:33.12 Matthew Should be shown and not told. 17:45.74 Matthew Um, exactly. 17:48.48 Leonard And creates bisexual I love bisexual love triangle for Chris and and cronenberg at the end and that's how you end this fill. 17:55.28 Matthew I Mean that's true at the very least I would want to see like at least like him in the furnace or something they just they didn't show any of that. It was just all off screen which I thought like for the character that you spend so much time building. 18:06.93 Leonard Yes. 18:15.16 Matthew To not see the end of it I thought that was a little bit of a letdown but that's that's all in the future here because right now. Ah our boy Chris Romero Spanky himself is immediately in love with a girl he sees across the street girl. We find out is named Cynthia Cronenberg which which is fantastic. Yeah, oh fantastic. So just instantly falls in plot love with her. Um, and it's just like I'm going to marry that girl and like settle down and whatever and and. 18:37.43 Leonard She loves flies. 18:43.77 Leonard E. 18:51.95 Matthew Jase's right he's like you actually have to talk to her. Um for any of this to happen and then just immediately it is like hey toots. What's your name like you know the um and yeah. 18:55.39 Leonard But oh yeah, yeah, he he's doing. He's doing the very 80 S wing man thing like like it's very It's very top gun. It's. 19:14.57 Matthew Oh yeah, absolutely and ah through they they go into the party where she's at it's at the beta house. Um, ah, we think that she's dating some jock named Steve which Jc pulls a fast 1 on to get him to go. Answer a phone or something like that and ah. 19:31.22 Leonard He he he's he literally just tells him hey there's a phone call for you and he's like thanks man and then walks off. 19:38.60 Matthew Yeah, yeah, like that's a normal thing to get in the middle of a party that has literally hundreds of people at it's just a phone call. Whatever yeah, ah, it's very it. It's it's just of its time. Um, and. Then they want to pledge this house because they think oh she only has eyes for guys who are in this house because she's a sorority sister and their fraternity brothers. Um, and then we get the scene with the fraternity brothers who are all 1 of them is the the main guy Brad um, he is from. Ah. 20:13.21 Leonard Ah. 20:14.90 Matthew But is it. Mama's family that sitcom he's a character from from that sitcom. Ah yeah, he's Bubba. Yeah, my my partner recognized them right away. 20:19.64 Leonard Oh um, oh he's ba is he baba. Oh oh man I just added myself at I've just added myself as somebody who knows the names of the characters from Mama's fat family. 20:33.89 Matthew All right you you get? you get 1 kiss my grits and then you're done you can use it at any time. 20:35.57 Leonard So hey guess what in case, you didn't think in in case, you didn't think I was a litch ah from the eighteenth century he there you go ah him fact. Um. 20:52.39 Matthew Um, and at this point I am beginning to question whether or not these guys are snobs or slobs because their house is trashed. It looks like shit. But these all these guys all look like they're in the yacht club and have like blonde quaffs and. 21:00.62 Leonard Ah. 21:07.60 Matthew And they just like you know. 21:07.24 Leonard Ah, this was this was. 21:11.40 Matthew They have that. What do you call it that like mid-atlantic accent or whatever. It's not quite. Yeah, so that they just act on a little too fancy. Yes, yes, yes, yes, just. 21:16.00 Leonard Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, like oh oh most bostonian. 21:27.78 Leonard Um, yeah, that's when I like because I haven't watched this movie in over a decade. Um and I distinctly remember it being kind of like smart and scathing in like it's production. And the way that people were dressed and and shot and this like douche bag kind doll Um, um, fraternity scene where they all just kind of look like like Stepford husbands I was like okay. 21:57.21 Matthew Um. 22:00.41 Matthew They really do yeah. 22:03.81 Leonard I'm back I'm like I'm super into this movie because this movie knows exactly what it's doing actually. 22:10.60 Matthew Yeah, cause I was at first I'm like oh man these tropes they're just kind of piling up then I'm like oh wait a minute. They're purposefully like they're just shoveling shit onto the pile. They're like how much of this like pastiche that it's it's fresh. It's you know it's it's it's it's 86 22:18.61 Leonard Consist. 22:25.20 Leonard Yes, yes. 22:29.30 Matthew But you can tell this director is just like I have seen way too much of all of this and I'm going to just tear it to pieces by adding as much of it as I can to this and it works. It's great. The jock is is very funny and very stupid. The snob is like. 22:34.20 Leonard You Yeah, it's so good. 22:47.61 Matthew So like like dialed to 11 like at 1 point he kicks the the disabled guy's crutches out of his hands like it's just everything about it is just dial to 11 and and that's great, but they yeah they yeah. 22:54.47 Leonard Yes. 23:02.51 Leonard Yeah, they're all ah weird cartoon characters. 23:06.56 Matthew Exactly Yeah, Ah, they're all cartoon characters of of their tropes. Um, but they give these guys a ah a pledge week. Ah challenge. They say that they'll they'll be considered to be inducted if they steal and dump a corpse. Onto the pog house. Ah so they have to go to a medical lab on campus take a cadaver and leave it on a medical house which I have looked it up. This is a thing that has been done. Um, that is yeah ah nightmare nightmare nightmare nightmare nightmare. 23:37.88 Leonard Sure has. 23:45.46 Matthew To like treat human remains in that way. It just requires you to be so I don't know either. You need to be included so badly or you've been. 23:55.81 Leonard I mean I mean Cynthia Cronenberg was really cute. 24:05.67 Matthew Ah, see now I'm thinking about whether or not I would do that to get a girl's phone number and I don't know I don't know man I don't know if I've ever been that in need sit the a crowded Bur That's true. 24:12.76 Leonard I don't what what if that girl's name was Cynthia Cronenberg and there was a chance that you could you could in fact, be dating a secret cronenberg daughter. 24:27.42 Matthew Ah, ah man I could be the next director of the next infinity pool. This would be amazing right? Is it called Infinity Pool is that the name of that film. What's it called. It is yeah all right, all right Infinity pool. Oh my God All right. 24:30.88 Leonard Ah. 24:35.43 Leonard It is It is infinity pull. But. 24:45.83 Matthew Yeah, that's sure so these guys are just like sure and I'm like wow they went along with that way too easily? um and it was acceptable in the 80 s to to desecrate human remains ah to get tailed. It's just it. It is a thing. 24:52.53 Leonard It it. It was acceptable in the 80 s it was acceptable at the time. 25:04.82 Leonard I mean you would be. You would be shocked by how how often that happened in reality and also in films. So. 25:05.40 Matthew That has happened in this country. 25:16.47 Matthew Oh I listen have you read the book stiff about what happens to your corpse after you die and the and possibilities with it because um, Yikes ah some things can happen to that thing. 25:20.68 Leonard If. 25:31.24 Matthew Anyway, not to get too dark during this this fun somieef. Ah but they decide. Yeah there you go I'm going to stuff myself with Birdse I think sky burial is the way to do it. Just let the birds kind of take parts of me and. 25:35.33 Leonard I mean I plan on stuffing myself with C four. So. 25:48.89 Matthew Fly off. 25:49.32 Leonard You you can't do the the I'm got to stuff myself with birdseed because then I'm just thinking of the feed the bird songs from Mary Poppins and that's just the dark. That's the edgy dark version of Mary Poppins 26:01.96 Matthew Ah, yeah, that's me I want those two kids to just throw my my stuffed corpse onto like the square in London and watch the pigeons just have at it well Dick Van Dyke is doing this terrible accent near me. 26:07.43 Leonard 1 c. 26:15.17 Leonard Um, ah, that's a that's a little too. That's a that's a little a bit of a too scathing commendation for the state of the of of of London and England. 26:26.19 Matthew Of the N A just. 26:30.40 Leonard In the twenty first century thank you very much sir corpse fold up full of birdsie heeds in the square paddington is eating his marmalade sandwich. 26:37.50 Matthew Yeah, but those kids are so entertained. 26:48.20 Matthew But all right ah back on Jack here we find out that Cynthia's boyfriend was not Steve the jock but in fact, it was the bradster himself. Um, and when pushed to see whether or not he would. 26:48.96 Leonard Can I. 27:05.43 Matthew Actually induct those guys into the Beta house by his brothers for doing this.. He's like no, he just wants them to get in trouble or to do something stupid. Um, and that's when we cut to um. The cryogenics lab Apparently at this college and yep, the Umbrella Lab everybody knows it's there open secret. Um, where the doctor who is trying to get into the cryogenics lab. 27:28.52 Leonard Yep, the Umbrella Lab Under ucla. 27:40.44 Matthew Ah, can remember all but the last number of his password. What? what? a plot device ah to get into this and there's there's no timer, you just push the buttons and then he like goes and makes a phone call to try to get the last number and ah like just. 27:45.79 Leonard Ah, ah. 27:55.17 Leonard Yep, it's It's so it's really dumb. That's why I called it an Umbrella lab. That's why I called it an Umbrella lab because you'd expect this to be like a note plot point in a resident evil game. 27:57.33 Matthew Wow Like I was like it's really dumb. 28:11.11 Leonard Honestly. 28:11.21 Matthew Yeah, yeah, exactly yeah they got to go like move hands on a clock to find the last number to know how to get in there or something but no, um, our boys just walk right into this cryogenics lab and push zero on the keypad and it opens right up and. When confronted with a state of the art cryogenics lab and a man who has been frozen since fifty nine. Um, what do they do they immediately start fucking around um like they like stand there for a little bit too long in a of what's going on. And then Jc just starts pushing buttons man. Um, just you know in horror movies like you you yell at the screen when people are making bad choices and stuff. But this is like a baffling choice. Why they were just like yeah no I guess we'll take this one sure um, it's a cryogenics lab which means he could. Technically still be alive. But nope gonna take this one. Um, they push the buttons open up the tube that our frozen boyfriend is inside of um, ah and they start caring him out which again, um. Just totally willing to handle a corpse just like no problem. No screaming no issues just like yeah just you get his legs out I'll get his arms and ah, but then. 29:34.73 Leonard I mean I mean he's intact he's wearing tidy Whiteys It's far. He's just a little cold and clammy. Yes, he does. 29:40.14 Matthew He does have he does have little undies on which is like well because when they first showed like the tube there was like frost over there and I was like if this is like an 80 s movie. Are they gonna show anything because I know there's you know it's it's. 29:51.68 Leonard Of course. 29:59.76 Matthew You know it's ah it's one of those like movies where you know you're going to see like 2 seconds of boobs or whatever and I'm like are they going to show hog in this one? No yes, he has little future underwear on we were all we've all been deprived. Yeah. 30:05.70 Leonard The ha. 30:11.19 Leonard No, he's literally just got tidy white. He's on it isn't even dock man had in future underwear. It's just tidy widey. 30:22.38 Matthew Ah, all right somebody paused to inspect. Um and ah. 30:29.14 Leonard I Just remember I just remember from being a an impressionable teenager. Thank you very much. Ah, it though, There's so much fun I love him he said sarcastically. 30:34.79 Matthew Yeah, formative memories right? Um, and yes. 30:45.64 Matthew Ah, ah he he moves right? That's what scares them like he opens his eyes or something um and scares the boys they go running away. Ah and this ah this frozen boyfriend gets up. 30:50.18 Leonard Yeah. 31:01.98 Matthew And starts walking and goes after the ah the doctor that could not remember the number in the hallway right? That's what happens next Lab Tech man. Um, and ah. 31:10.75 Leonard Lab Tech. Oh. 31:18.66 Matthew Then we get the phone call to detective Ray Cameron which he answers the phone every time by saying throw me ah which I don't know if that was this is this is Tom Atkins um this this guy rules he is just. 31:22.73 Leonard Here. 31:31.85 Leonard Yeah, it is this. Ah this is this is this is motherfucking Halloween three Tom Atkins thank you very much. He. 31:37.50 Matthew He just choose the scenery. Yeah, go for it man go for it. 31:49.32 Matthew Um, yeah, he oh yeah, oh yeah, but yeah, yeah, he's he's he's He's been on a lot of stuff. Yeah. 31:51.16 Leonard Have you seen Alloween 3 season of the wedge. Yeah yeah, that yeah, good old Tom Atkins but he knows what he's doing. 32:04.94 Matthew I Don't know if these character ah quirks were his decision or in the writing but it just makes this character. This is like a super grizzled detective who is idiosyncratic to a T he like is always like you know. 32:15.94 Leonard He's so good. 32:24.48 Matthew Like just pulling an entire cigarette all at once or he answers the phone extremely aggressively. He shows up and makes everyone feel like a dip shit. It's just everything he does is just again like crank to 11 just so good though. It's just. 32:27.40 Leonard A. 32:42.52 Matthew Yeah. 32:42.55 Leonard It's it. It's like he was a side character in 7 and then somehow god ah is a guide into this movie. 32:49.88 Matthew Ah, it's true. The tenacity in which he approaches stuff is just like it does not match anything else that's happening on screen and it's It's very very good so he shows up to the cryogenics lab. 32:53.47 Leonard From. 32:59.20 Leonard No, but. 33:07.70 Matthew Ah, and is upset that there's only 1 body when he was told there were 2 and just kind of points out the incompetence everyone there. Ah we get our um our classic coroner eating a sandwich routine. 33:20.63 Leonard Sure, do. 33:21.10 Matthew Which which is like a trope that I see all the time the corner just like so easy with bodies that he I think every scene that corner's in he's eating a sandwich um and except for the one where he gets it where I think the sandwich is just on the table. But ah there is a sandwich that is a scene partner with this guy. 33:28.62 Leonard And her. But we'll see if he had been eating the sandwich he wouldn have survived because because he would because his mouth would have been Fall. Yep that sandwiches done. 33:40.42 Matthew Oh you're right sandwich Ex machina. 33:52.40 Leonard Thank you very much. 33:54.24 Matthew Why oh my gosh? Um, so yeah, ah, he's mad that there's only one body here. There is a. 34:06.90 Matthew What is it like a night janitor that saw these kids that they got to get an interview from um, it's it's It's a whole crewfuffle but it begins the kind of the cop arc of this. Um, the fact that the that yeah it gets extremely dark. 34:17.56 Leonard Yes, which dominates the middle third of this movie. 34:26.93 Matthew Um, but the fact that ah Ray didn't recognize frozen jock even though they're like from the same school or college or I'm not really sure. Um I thought that was gonna be a plot point but that never that didn't go through so I guess he just another dude right. 34:39.50 Leonard Well to be fair when races him his head has like a blooming onion opened up. So. 34:51.83 Matthew Oh that's true. Yeah, yeah, that's very fair and that's about to happen. Um this ah this this man in his underwear has walked across campus to the sorority house has picked a flower and climbed up. 34:55.94 Leonard 5 35:08.99 Matthew Ah, the fire escape to try to get inside to see his girlfriend the exact same room that we saw in black and white early early on and it's Cynthia that sees this this undead man there and starts to scream and yeah his head. Blooms open like like a blooming onion and leeches go everywhere right? Just just like an outback steakhouse. No rules just leeches. 35:31.74 Leonard Like like you were and an out that steakhouse. Yeah yeah, yes. 35:44.39 Leonard Yeah, just yes, exactly? Um, which hey that you a fun bit of world building with this hey. Ah, that means that like there's still a little bit of the person in there. 35:48.79 Matthew Um. 35:59.67 Leonard Even though there's weird leech things making them do stuff so that that'll actually figure in later in the film. 36:00.60 Matthew Yeah. 36:08.71 Matthew It does? Yeah yeah, the the people yeah because I think everyone is driven to like be doing what they were doing previously um, including the very long dead man. Ah, which that's yeah, that's a fun scene later on. Um. 36:23.11 Leonard Um, you mean the corpse that looks kind of like John Carpenter 36:25.14 Matthew But our yeah, a little bit. Um, ah but ah yeah, Cameron Ray Cameron gets ah called to this ah this scene um sees a body with an exploded face. Um. And he thinks that it's an axe wound. Um, which he this is now when he has the flashback right to coming upon the car and finding the ah the escaped mental health patient um killing his. 36:52.40 Leonard Yes. 37:02.59 Matthew His now ex-girlfriend with an axe way back in the 50 s yes his ah his relationship status has been changed to his complicated. It comes to this woman mostly because of the axe wounds. But um. 37:03.38 Leonard His his now Ex not girlfriend. 37:16.96 Leonard Instantly. 37:21.72 Matthew Yeah, so he has like a flashback to that. Um, the next day. Ah Chris and jcah this is in the sixty s now are the 80 s man ah its in the 80 s Chris and Jc get confronted. Ah, by the frat bros and they say that it was not cool that they dumped a corpse on this sorority house. They were supposed to dump it somewhere else. Um and they were like we chickened out. We didn't do it. Brad does that horrible thing where he kicks the crutch out from under Jc. And this is where Cynthia decides that she's had enough does the Jack in the box middle finger to him and everyone claps which which got a really good laugh at of me just like and then everyone clapped and and there were no russian her at all. 38:07.86 Leonard Yes, ah you were like they actually did the thing and this in this film before the internet existed. They actually did the thing. 38:18.54 Matthew But I know right? but Brad is like such an abusive piece of shit that I thought there was gonna be like a huge repercussion for that and there just kind of wasn't um so I'm thankful for that because that did not need to be in this film. 38:29.75 Leonard Now. 38:35.17 Matthew Um, just the everyone clapping and then her leaving for good like that that was good I like that good end. Um, ah they the boys get picked up by the cops. Um and asked about what they were doing. Um. Ah, in the in the lab that night because the cops didn't that connected to the corpse. Ah the night janitor says they were screaming like banshees and says it like 10 times. Um, this nice old actor here. He just really really enjoys that line and laughs every time he says it and. 39:06.20 Leonard Um, it. 39:14.22 Matthew You know it's kind of nice. Um, but um, ah, um, so they get they they get off they they you know the cops don't hold them ah and we get introduced to the janitor that just says screaming like banshes and laughing to himself over again over and over again. Um, let's see where are we here in our timeline this is when things start to get like mixed up because there is the story with the 2 2 boys trying to get 1 girl for one boy and then it's intercut with. 39:43.60 Leonard Oh right. 39:51.84 Leonard It's. 39:53.10 Matthew Ray like trying to track down the sins of his past and intercut with that or what the slugs are doing and then intercut with that is ah like what the zombies are doing um which there's just so much happening. 39:58.20 Leonard Yes. 40:10.22 Leonard Which isn't much. They're mostly possessing. Yeah yes, the the the slugs are possessing um animals. Um Cynthia one of Cynthia's ah um, not frat. What's the. 40:11.47 Matthew All at once? yeah. 40:19.21 Matthew Here. 40:27.92 Matthew Sorority. Yeah yeah, sorority sisters. Yes, it's like oh what's up. Checkoff's brains. Yeah, put him in the basement. It'll be fine. 40:28.28 Leonard Other sorority is like hey can I store all these brains in the basement and she's like yeah sure, whatever. Um, we've got. 40:42.95 Matthew What a weird thing to be able to take off campus What is up with human remains in this place. 40:50.91 Leonard Um, the the milk toast boys are getting in that. Ah ah, investigated and um Ray is having hyper p t s d. 41:00.79 Matthew A. 41:02.42 Leonard About that hard and more murder that he obviously committed back in the 50 s. 41:08.84 Matthew Yep, yeah, even his partners just like that was twenty seven years ago blah blah blah he's dead because I think his partner knows that Ray killed him. 41:16.97 Leonard I Don't think his partner does I think his partner thinks that the the Axe murder just went off and stopped being the next murderer. 41:27.29 Matthew Sure all right? Either way everyone is like looking at this sweaty shaking cop and they're like he's fine. Don't worry about it. He's fine. That's just how he is Yeah, that's true. 41:37.34 Leonard Yeah, yeah, well he's a detective. He's not a beat cop. He's a detective detectives in the 80 s and saying thrill me. 41:45.89 Matthew And he answers the phone by screaming at you? Yeah yeah, oh my god just like a trail of cigarette butts behind this guy wherever he goes just like it's so good. He's he's very very good. And scene he's in as a treasure. Um, so yeah, the slugs are infecting animals. Um, which we see a a cat and a dog get got yeah one of ah Cynthia's sorority sisters I think lets a cat in at 1 point and then. 42:21.58 Leonard Yes, and at a later point She lets the infected cat in. 42:23.72 Matthew And ah and is like oh you know you know happy you to see the cat. Yep and then that's when she gets infected um and you see a bunch of people get and got like ah the janitor gets got the corner gets got um. The lab assistant walks out of the Morgue after taking out the corner and is just like covered in blood has hemostats attached to his neck and like it's this cough like walks by read the chart is like have a good day. It just like it' it pay attention and I like okay, that's pretty funny that was pretty good. 42:55.25 Leonard Um, yeah. 43:02.99 Leonard Um. 43:04.10 Matthew Um, we find out that the ah sorority mother's house was built on top of the site where um Ray Cameron buried the the corpse of the. Axe murder that he tracked down and killed. Um, we don't know that yet. But there's a flashback to him wrapping someone in plastic and we're like hu huh wonder what? that is um. 43:29.83 Leonard Yep yep I Really do love the commitment to all the flashbacks during that time actually being in black and white. 43:44.62 Matthew Yeah, no, it goes to a completely different film style. It's like like the speed is different the the color grading is different. Everything's different and it's it's like I said it's it's 4 movies shot very differently and edited together very well. Um, yeah. 43:47.60 Leonard E. 44:01.80 Matthew It's I know it's set a lot but they don't make movies like this anymore. This is this is very strange. Yeah, but it's good. Um, this is when we get ah Cynthia and JC and Chris all going on a walk together. 44:05.56 Leonard They yeah. 44:17.87 Leonard Yes. 44:19.40 Matthew Um, because JC can't take a goddamn hint and let them go alone to begin with um. 44:23.36 Leonard I think no no I honestly think that Chris asked JC to come with him to be his wing man because Chris is such like a feckless like you know, sad sack fish. 44:29.19 Matthew Oh yeah. 44:36.19 Matthew Yeah, he is such a cold fish. Yeah. 44:40.53 Leonard That he's like I need my buddy. Yeah, and that's what I think like that's I I laughed at that because I was this like oh yeah I bet Chris absolutely asked Jay to be the life of the party on this date with him and Cynthia ah, ah. 45:01.17 Matthew Ah, because like every time Cynthia looks at him he like turns around and like can't look and whatever but then halfway on this walk Cynthia who is like going through shit like she just saw a dude's head explode and was left on the front of her house. She is like legitimately concerned that she has seen a zombie. And like she goes to 1 person she can trust kind of that she just met for help buries her face in his chest and he just looks at his friend and he goes yes I'm go to get laid. Yes I was like dude now is now's not the time. 45:26.78 Leonard Yeah, yes, bad reaction. Bad bad JC shouldn't like you as much as he does. 45:34.62 Matthew But bet. Yeah bet. Yeah, exactly. Ah anyway, um so after all that we find out that Ray Cameron has been following them on their date after he drops her back off at the house which um which I'm kind of curious to go back and rewatch to see if you can see him in the background anywhere. Ah because that would be a gorgeous detail if they did that. Um, but he's just like hey yeah, she just like admitted to a bunch of stuff and I got like more questions for you? um. 45:56.94 Leonard Oh that would be fun. 46:11.57 Matthew And ah turns out. Yeah yeah, turns out dad' been drinking a little bit kids and now you're gonna you're gonna hear some some horrible shit that happened and yeah and he basically like it's just flat out I love that he like takes out 2 glasses. 46:12.80 Leonard But rather than ask you questions I'm going to confess to a murder. 46:31.15 Matthew Pours 1 glass of whiskey and keeps it for himself and doesn't offer the kid. It's so good like like ah so funny. 46:36.31 Leonard Yeah, yeah, and the way that the the way that the sequence is shot. It's like really high tension like ah very close like hard close ups on Ray and like. 46:49.58 Matthew E. 46:52.70 Leonard Fairly close medium shots on Chris at like a very slight dutch angle and it's just like Ray confessing this this murder and it keeps like zooming in on Chris's face every time it cuts back to him. 46:56.79 Matthew And he. 47:09.40 Leonard While Ray's talking about this and I actually wrote down I like Ray Finishes his story and I love Chris's reaction to this which is look detective I don't mean to be rude or anything. 47:12.17 Matthew It's Chris is getting more and more concerned. 47:26.30 Leonard But other than kind of wanting to confess to a murder is there any point to this story. 47:34.90 Matthew Ah, it's true. We don't know what the hell he's going on about at all of. 47:35.66 Leonard It. It's it's such a good line after like how the like it's it's it's kind of a Marvel line like a pre marvel Marvel line to cut the tension. But it's it's. 47:48.48 Matthew Um, yeah. 47:52.71 Leonard Perfect in this film. 47:54.88 Matthew It works really? Well, it really does um and so like Chris is just like I gotta I gotta get out of here because this is this is freaking crazy. Um, at this point the the like the the leeches have been waking things up have been like you know. Ah, they're in a bunch of cats and whatever else? Um, ah this is when ah. 48:23.78 Leonard Don't think get the call that the the sorority mother has been killed. 48:28.68 Matthew Right? Yes, this is when yeah we get the the scene. Oh yeah, because it comes to her house and she's watching fricking plan 9 from outer space which I was like all right, all right? all right? So that's why I'm like this is entirely tongue in cheek. There's no way it's not um, they're like oh yeah. 48:34.90 Leonard She sure is. 48:45.39 Matthew Yeah, I'm gonna put a bad movie in my bad movie. This is gonna be good. Um, and yeah, ah and um, oh yeah, and this is also right before that scene is where Jc gets got because Jc goes to to find a bathroom. Um. 48:47.80 Leonard My my well executed bad movie actually. 49:01.92 Leonard Yes, yes. 49:05.40 Matthew And actually goes to find a bathroom and we get his like struggle and death scene in a bathroom stall where he learns he can light them on fire to kill them. Ah and it's a very claustrophobic shot piece. Um, which is mostly just like. 49:14.83 Leonard Yes. 49:23.37 Leonard Ah. 49:24.70 Matthew Ah, like shoulders up um and like inside a stall and then crawling on the ground then surrounded by these things and then that's it that is the last we see of this character. It is over for him. Yeah, alive. 49:38.70 Leonard Alive. Yes, no no because Chris finds him after he listens to the tape that I still don't remember how he got um like. 49:41.14 Matthew Actually at all I don't think we see him at all after this right. 49:46.79 Matthew Right? It was on. It was just in the room. Yeah yeah. 49:54.72 Leonard That yeah because the tape tells him all he needs know about the ah Alien leeches but I don't know how he got it and I'm like oh I bet this was actually a thing that was cut out. Um, yeah. 50:01.21 Matthew A. 50:08.62 Matthew Yeah, it seems like there was something cut or so something's missing here because then like Cynthia also mentions like having buried the cat and like they all knew it was dead and then it came back with a ah you know it came back as a zombie later and ah that was also yeah, cut out around this time. 50:21.21 Leonard Right. 50:26.61 Matthew And so that there was there's something missing from this film. We don't know exactly what it is but um, yeah, so after that happens it cuts the so and mother's house where something is just banging on the floor. There's just an old lady sitting in a ah one room kind of house. Um, watching plan 9 Dozing off on the couch. She's got a little dog that's sleeping near her as well and just like not really caring that there's this horrible slamming sound constantly happening until it was way too late and an axe comes up through the floor which it's covered in blood. It's like holy shit. 51:02.21 Leonard Yet. 51:04.62 Matthew Um, yeah, and then just like like the tar man comes out of the ground. It's just like a completely rotted corpse holding an axe comes up and and just like puts it right in this old lady's head um and that. 51:09.81 Leonard He. 51:20.40 Leonard And then it turns into a police procedural with 5 squad cars for 15 minutes 51:24.46 Matthew Yeah, yeah, yeah, this is like the where the hell is my backup and then there's like you know all these cars on the street and you know there's like a bit of a car chase Ray Cameron still drives the patrol car he was driving back in the 50 s which I think is a great touch. 51:43.97 Leonard Yep yep. 51:44.23 Matthew Um, because there's all these new modern cars around him and he's still driving that like old clunky thing that's been kept you know in pristine condition. Um, which I thought that was that that was a real good insight to his character there just stuck in the past. Um, and ah. 51:56.57 Leonard Business. 52:04.70 Matthew Yeah, we get the tape. Um, that says you know here's how you kill these things ah from from Jc to Chris at this point. Um you know, use fire. I'm putting myself in the furnace that that they that you're still alive but they're using your brain to plant eggs or something I don't know how he knows all this but he does um and then we're back with Cameron. Um, who is confronting the murder of his past who isn't really much of a threat I guess he kills that old lady they find him he's standing there with an axe and does he does he recognize ray. 52:43.97 Leonard Yes. 52:51.52 Leonard We get a great reveal. Yeah, when he he's facing away from all of the clock cops in a corner Blair Witchie as fuck and then he turns around and it's just ah desiccated John Carpenter 52:54.27 Matthew Yeah, great reveal of this guy's face. Um. 53:09.21 Leonard And he smiles at ray. 53:10.10 Matthew Um, yeah, all the cops start shooting um the bullet holes are like backlit for some reason when they're blasting through the zombie I Thought that was a really fun touch. Ah, and then yeah and then raise like fuck it. 53:22.31 Leonard It's a good touch. 53:26.15 Matthew It just like has this ah ah pump action shotgun and just like puts 1 right into the into the zombies head blows it up and leeches go everywhere. Um, and that's the end of that arc I guess. 53:36.77 Leonard Yes, um, the it is and my favorite thing about that put ah pump action shotgun is when he lets Chris go he tells Chris to get him his shotgun which is just. Under his bed with a bunch of buckshot. 53:54.58 Matthew Yeah, just yep, it's just down there. Don't worry about it. Um, ah. 54:00.70 Leonard Oh oh can we also talk about the scene that is never commented on where Ray oh now this is this happens after um when Chris reconnects with Ray we'll get to that. 54:12.35 Matthew Um, yeah, that's happening soon. Oh no I think I jumped the gun with the tape because this is the night where it's like the next night everyone's getting ready for the formal dance. Ah Chris has gotten the invite from Cynthia. Um. 54:13.30 Leonard Ah, shortly. 54:28.58 Matthew A bunch of kids ask Chris where's JC at and then they walk away before he can give an answer and I was like I was ah that's a weird way to do that. But sure all right? Um, ah ah, but but this is when um, the ah bradster. 54:36.25 Leonard Yeah. 54:48.12 Matthew Ah, ah, something runs across his foot. He looks down sees a dog coming. He's like hey friendly dog. Can you help me and it's one of those dogs that when they get mad it barks and shoots worms at you. Um and shoots a worm right into Brad's mouth which. 54:57.43 Leonard Yeah, yeah. 55:04.11 Matthew Obviously these are like film in reverse you know they like pull it out with a piece of string and do the film in reverse but it just looks for all the world. They's got a dog turd in his mouth for like 3 frames and it's just very. It's a very funny picture. Um, yeah, so Chris is getting ready for the formal. Um. 55:09.30 Leonard Um. 55:12.61 Leonard Um. 55:23.75 Matthew He's got a tux on and this is when he gets to yep are really yeah, a really chumpy looking tux. Um and this is when he gets the the message from Jc that says hey this is you know how they incubate they go in your brains. They're susceptible to heat. 55:25.60 Leonard He's got a tonux. 55:43.40 Matthew Um, he says he loves Chris and wishes in luck with Cynthia um, and then Chris goes to ah I think the next shot is immediately Chris finding Cameron right finding Ray and he's just like um, a mess and he's just like hey. 55:55.67 Leonard Yes, yes. 56:02.80 Matthew Look at all this you know? ah we you know we need help. We need to kill these things blah blah blah Ray was like ah he had his door taped up. Yeah, which which is really subtly shown because we think like because. 56:12.69 Leonard Gonna oven himself. 56:18.42 Leonard Yep. 56:18.65 Matthew When it showed his door taped up I thought he was paranoid because of the slugs but then it pans to the other side of the room as he's getting ready and the oven's just open and hissing and I was like oh shit. Yeah. 56:28.57 Leonard Um, and he and and and then he turns it off while he when he leaves. 56:38.25 Matthew Because you know you don't want the house to blow up or something you know which you hit time to go? Yeah um, but they go to the go to the police requisition armory. Ah. 56:39.11 Leonard I I mean hit I mean his arc was over so it's time to go out. 56:55.10 Leonard Oh. 56:56.59 Matthew And threaten just the nicest guy there with a shotgun through the bars for a police issue flamethrower which I don't know how bad it is in California. Um, they're not carrying flamethrowers here in Vermont yet. Um, but the fact that not only does this dude have it but knows. All of its little idiosyncrasies because it's been used so much. Oh yeah, you got to let the pilot go for this amount of time before you can use it blah blah blah like how often are cops using flamethrowers. 57:24.41 Leonard Yeah, and and this is a famed cat. Not very out here fortunately um, but this is a. Famed character actor Dick Miller from gremlins and gremlins too. It is. That's that's that's that's why the sequence between him and Ray is like 7 minutes long 57:40.70 Matthew Oh it is isn't it. Yeah, there's all sorts of treats in this movie. It's really good. 57:56.74 Leonard Because they're like will he paid for Dick Miller so you have to get some dick Miller in this film. 57:59.84 Matthew Yeah, but they really dragged it out which was great. Um, they get the flamethrower. They are all set for that. Um, they arrive at the sorority house. Ah. Just as Cynthia is trying to break up with Brad who is possessed ah like he shows up at the house and they're just like oh great joke or whatever. Um, because he like is obviously undead and they think he's just playing a prank which what the fuck who is this guy that you're so used to him being like this. 58:28.80 Leonard Yes. 58:33.70 Matthew Um, and ah. 58:35.94 Leonard And and and and incoming is the now undead Chad bus which we failed to mention which ah flipped and killed all of the ah fraternity members on it in front of the dog. 58:40.94 Matthew Oh yeah. 58:47.38 Matthew Yeah. 58:52.55 Leonard Clearly possessed with the brain eating leeches. 58:55.93 Matthew Yeah, um, yeah, they were all on their way to the sororities to pick up their dates to go to this formal they were like partying up on the bus and yeah, a huge bus accident. And then all these zombies pull themselves out of the bus. 1 ne's missing a leg and he's just dragging himself and there's this huge line of blood right? behind it. Just yeah, it's it's great. It's really really good. Um, and ah, Cynthia's trying to break up with an undead Brad which she's not looking at which is like what the fuck. 59:14.67 Leonard Yep. 59:23.90 Leonard Um. 59:27.10 Matthew And then he just becomes like a dispenser for leeches. They just start flying out of his mouth like like 1 of those lawn sprinklers. It's just. 59:31.46 Leonard Well, he is a a long sprinkler peg dispenser. Ah ah flailing ah wavy army arm 2 man only the the leeches are flying out of the arms. That's what bra is at this moment. 59:42.83 Matthew Yeah, ah. 59:47.80 Matthew Um, yeah, um, and ah, who who kills him it's ah it's Chris who kills him right? Oh that's right, doesn't he say it's Miller time when he shoots him. 59:49.19 Leonard And. 59:56.10 Leonard Yes, yes, yes, he does because because the Frat house The the where all the pledges have to get like there. There. You know pledge instructions looks like um like it would like they filmed on the set of chairs and all I remember from that scene was a giant neon sign that set Miller light on it. 01:00:26.60 Matthew There were Miller Lights in every scene that there was drinking. There was Miller lights. Ah when they were getting ready for the formal on all of their mirrors. All the guys had a bottle of Miller Light Miller Lite is my beer of choice. So I saw it right away. 01:00:31.10 Leonard Yeah, yeah. 01:00:39.60 Matthew And I was just like damn there's a lot of Miller light this film and so when he says is Miller time I was like oh this is paid for this is bought and paid for man. No one's that big of a fan that they would say it on their own. 01:00:42.38 Leonard I. 01:00:55.56 Matthew But it was really good and then now we enter the part of the film where no one acts correctly. Um there is ah a literal corpse. Yeah, there's a corpse with its like head blown off on the front steps of this place of a very like huge. 01:00:58.79 Leonard Of course it's it's it's this. It's the zombie portion of the film. 01:01:14.10 Matthew Character like a big character on this scene like like the bradster everyone knows him everyone knows who he is his like shot up corpse is on the front steps of the sorority and everyone walks around it like it's a garbage bag. They don't want to take to the can like like no one gives a shit about it anymore and they're just like. 01:01:16.15 Leonard You right. 01:01:25.36 Leonard Um. 01:01:33.73 Matthew Right? You know I guess only in death did we find out how people really feel about us. Um, so um, there is a lot of running around here Cynthia immediately like Chris doesn't get a chance to use a flamethrower Cynthia just has it on. 01:01:51.63 Leonard Yes. 01:01:52.59 Matthew In 1 of the scenes and they're doing this one two punch where Chris is shooting off heads and Cynthia is flamethrowing which I was like why are you waiting just set these guys on fire I don't know why it has to be 1 than the other you're right? yeah. 01:01:58.68 Leonard No, they only need to kill the leeches that it was actually kind of brilliant which is like Amen Chris is getting the crits with the head shots and then she's saving saving feel on only burning the leeches. 01:02:18.23 Matthew That's fair. Yeah. 01:02:18.44 Leonard It's resident evil 0 before resin evil 0 01:02:23.28 Matthew Yeah, there aren't a lot of boxes of yellow tape so they don't know how much more flinthrower fuel they're going to get so they get caught in a like ah ah ah, utility shed at 1 point. Um and they both have like. You know arms bust through on another side and they have to free themselves and a lawnmower comes into play which is a lot of fun. Well while all this is happening Ray is inside ah with just a revolver um, taking out these guys. Ah. 01:02:50.62 Leonard Um. 01:02:57.97 Matthew 3 at once which is one of my favorite scenes in this in this movie because he just starts screaming the camera starts spinning around him and he's just like it's it. Yeah, it's the 1980 s matrix and it's just. 01:03:02.32 Leonard Um. 01:03:15.91 Leonard Ah. 01:03:16.92 Matthew Headshotting these things as the entire room is spinning and he's screaming his lungs out. It's oh it's so good I I loved it? Um, ah we find out is it Cynthia who is just like oh my god the basement. Um. 01:03:32.51 Leonard Yeah, because they see they sees the the slug slithering like into what is it like heating ducks in that lead into the basement or like down the basement steps I can't remember specifically. But yeah. 01:03:42.30 Matthew Right? right? Yeah, and then since Cynthia was like oh that plot point we established earlier. It's in the basement and and yeah. 01:03:54.63 Leonard Ah, there are brunt bunch of brains in our serity house basement Zach Bagins I we think this is haunted. 01:04:00.83 Matthew Yeah, but also luckily ah, there is a Ray Cameron down there with a can of gasoline. Um, and apparently in sorority basement. Yeah dutty bar's mouth I love that touch. Um, and apparently in sorority basements the things they store down. There are old books and papers and oily rags. 01:04:06.51 Leonard And Duct tape over his mouth. 01:04:19.26 Leonard And and also a big pile of brains in the corner. 01:04:20.71 Matthew They are everywhere it I was like one of these girl. Yeah huge file of brains Man sororities are wild. These are the things I missed out by not going to college. 01:04:32.76 Leonard That feels that feels like a joke from psychonots just the big pile of brains in the corner of the Sora in the house. 01:04:42.35 Matthew Yeah, it does but but um, the flamethrower is not working because they turn the pilot off because they're dumb and um ah camera starts counting down. And he's like get the hell out of here. Ah so Chris and Cynthia run out trying to keep their count synced up to I guess no one to be clear. Um, they are still too close to this house. Um, because Cameron opens up the. 01:05:14.39 Leonard Well, the house doesn't explode. Ah hey hey hey this is an actual UCL a sorority building we can only put the flame the flame things up. 01:05:16.59 Matthew I Know he opens the main gas line the street would explode if that caught on fire. 01:05:32.30 Leonard And and implied that exploded and then see show the audience things on fire that we can easily repaint. 01:05:37.52 Matthew Yeah, but at the end of this like there's an entire miniature cemeture cemetery and a macroture Alien Spaceship I'm like why couldn't we get a miniature like sorority house that just goes up because I would've loved that. 01:05:45.10 Leonard Yes, yes. 01:05:55.95 Leonard Because. 01:05:57.00 Matthew Um, but yeah, ah houseps pulls up our 2 leads Kiss everyone's clapping. Everything's fine. Um, and then bum bum bum we cut to 8 era chart corpse just trudging through the streets. Um. 01:06:00.95 Leonard Yes. Raised charred corpse. Also still smoking a cigarette which is a fantastic touch. 01:06:16.75 Matthew that's that's true oh yeah and when Ray Dies Chris steals his ah steals his thunder and he says thrill me at the end of the countdown before the house goes up so there you go passing the torch there. Yep so raise charred corpses charged through the street. 01:06:22.84 Leonard Um, yep, yep. 01:06:34.44 Matthew Ah, Falls over all the slugs come out into the I think it's like crest Ridge Cemetery or something. It has a really generic name and then we pan out to a huge miniature of a cemetery which is actually it's There's a matte painting and a miniature. It's It's gorgeous. It's great. Um. 01:06:39.37 Leonard Yes, yeah, so good. Yeah yep. 01:06:54.40 Matthew And then the low heavy hum and a spotlight of a massive spaceship overhead searching for these slugs and then credits like ah nobody knows that the aliens were ever a part of this. Ah. 01:06:55.55 Leonard From. 01:07:12.53 Leonard Ah, it's like if this movie came out today. It'd be like how dare they sequel bait this this thing but I'm like oh man this is like a 1986 sequel bait 01:07:13.70 Matthew Yeah. 01:07:22.39 Matthew Ah, who. 01:07:28.86 Leonard To a pretty fun movie that I'd like to see what what would happen if the ah Alien slugs that can control the dead got into a cemetery. 01:07:42.40 Matthew Yeah I was like I was waiting for that I was like that was gonna rule. Apparently there were 2 endings for this film. Um, yeah for the theatrical release. Ah there was a version where the dog who caused the bus accident. Ah. 01:07:47.62 Leonard Yes. 01:07:57.80 Matthew Walks up to Cynthia at the end ah and infects Cynthia and that would have been the end of the film. Yeah bad bad ending but the like the entire world is fucked because these things made their way into a cemetery ending is way better. Yeah, so. 01:08:01.80 Leonard Yeah Boo boo. 01:08:10.15 Leonard Is so good. It's so good. 01:08:17.37 Matthew Yeah, and that was night of the creeps. Ah man what I yeah I recommend absolutely yeah I know. 01:08:25.29 Leonard I'm I'm like you already know how I feel about this movie I Love this movie So God damn much. It's like surprisingly smart for when it was made it knows exactly what it is. 01:08:38.98 Matthew It's self-aware. Yeah. 01:08:41.79 Leonard And not in like the clawying annoying way that films can be self-aware. It's smartly self-aware in that once again, there's ah, there's a a set amount of time in this film where this film is 4 different films and they're. All shot in their specific styles very competently and and edited together very well. 01:09:05.60 Matthew Ah. 01:09:09.14 Matthew Yeah, it's I mean like what what else can you say about it. This guy Fred Decker like knew he's a fan right? like he is a fan of all these directors Romero Carpenter Ramy Landis Cronenberg 01:09:19.25 Leonard Yes, profession. 01:09:26.17 Matthew Ah, west craven like you can tell that he's watched all of this stuff he wanted to amalgamate it all into like 1 huge like cliche b movie but actually like got the budget to do something pretty decent with it but also kept it light and silly and like. You know whenever you find yourself going like hey I don't think that's how that kind of works. It's like it's a movie man just like please have fun with it and if you go into it thinking that. Ah you know bravo you did it. You're going to have a good time I guess I'm looking here. There is an unofficial sequel called zombie town. Um. 01:09:47.22 Leonard Yeah. 01:09:54.95 Leonard Um, yeah, ah. 01:10:01.58 Matthew Alternatively titled one of the creeps to zombie town. Um I don't know if you've ever seen that one or maybe you know I sometimes you just got to let sleeping dogs lie because um, it is not even a link on Wikipedia that I can click so that's not a good sign. That's not a good sign. 01:10:06.76 Leonard I Have not. 01:10:18.51 Leonard Ah, yeah, and and let's let's just do a quick ah Fred Decker Filmography um, before we wrap up knive the creeps. 01:10:20.85 Matthew Um, but. 01:10:27.30 Matthew Church. 01:10:32.80 Leonard Followed by monster squad ah a classic um followed by um, roboop 3 So we're not going to talk about that. Ah, um, and but he. 01:10:32.46 Matthew Um, yeah, have. 01:10:42.49 Matthew Ah, okay I have a very soft spot for rookop three I had that on Vhs I watched it a lot that yeah sorry I'm just a through and through robocop fan I've watched all of them way too many times but okay I'm excited that I yeah. 01:10:51.81 Leonard And all right? So it it at least you know he directed roboop 3 at this point then. 01:11:04.10 Matthew And then 2018 yeah the predator. Wow. 01:11:05.00 Leonard And wrote the predator after not doing anything since robocop 3 So wow. 01:11:19.67 Matthew That was the Shane Black 1 right that was like the incredibly silly one with like Keegan Michael key am I not wrong. Ah yeah Keegan Michael T Thomas Jane yeah yeah yeah I actually liked that movie a lot and everyone hated it. 01:11:28.35 Leonard Yes. 01:11:37.20 Leonard Um, yes oh. 01:11:37.54 Matthew Um, because it was a bmovie. It was very silly. It was like a robot mec predator suit at the end like it was so dumb. But I remember I saw that in theaters I remember really enjoying it for what it was but. Yeah, that got pan too which is kind of sad. 01:11:58.22 Leonard Ah, so at least from your standpoint ah a smash hit with every single film that he's either yeah either written or directed. So. 01:12:03.26 Matthew 10 out of 10 man. Yeah. 01:12:12.67 Matthew Ah, that's crazy. 01:12:12.81 Leonard I'm glad that I could find I glad I could finally slot this one into hey I like this director I think he's an Artur part of your brain. 01:12:19.98 Matthew I never knew I was such a fanboy although I'm seeing that he is uncredited on working on Titan Ae here new wo that one's not so great. 01:12:33.42 Leonard Yeah, it isn't He's uncredited So you you know plausible deniability. Sure. 01:12:37.27 Matthew But you know they can't all be zingers right. 01:12:43.21 Matthew Right? Exactly I can argue on the Reddit all night about it. Um, but well thanks Leonard for bringing this to my attention for bringing this into my life. Ah, this is a lot of fun. Yeah. 01:12:56.22 Leonard That's what I do I dredge up I dredge up. Thank you very much take this away from me and then this this mortal coil. Will not hold me any longer. 01:13:39.12 Matthew It's it sounds a lot like you got legs in your brain and you you need to share them. Ah anyway, ah yeah I think that'll do it. Where is this the part where we wrap up. 01:13:42.50 Leonard Ah, yeah, exactly. 01:13:49.34 Leonard This is the yeah this is the part where we do admin?
