WKRIO - Ep001 - Have You Heard the Good Word? === [00:00:00] Chris O: Hello and welcome to. A, uh, "Who knows" Episode of Running Inside Out Podcast where I ramble about the places the races, running things, or random things and really just try not to cause a scene. Now, a regular Rio episode would have a guest talking about their running adventures, and ideally talking more than I do during the episode. Alas, no guest to save you on this one. Today, Clara and I are going to check out a Oatka Creek Park. Uh, we recently had a slight bout of winter here. accidentally, I think, followed uh, closely by a slight bout of spring, and then the temperatures dropped. And as a result, the water that [00:01:00] desperately tried to become snow as it fell from the sky has now become ice. So let's, uh, see what it's like on the the trails All right. Oh, here we are. Oatka Creek Park. Nice snowy day. Let's see how y'all. I'm gonna like talk to you, but like not talk to you. You know, this is gonna be a bit of an adventure for both of us because, well, I don't generally talk to myself, I don't think. You know, let's see what stream of consciousness does, you know, and, uh, we'll see. As we saw, we're changing some things on this whole podcast here, and I guess that.[00:02:00] The way I thought about this was when I started running, you know, I didn't really know what I was doing. I just started to, tried to run, put some shoes on and ran, and I didn't meticulously plan it out. I didn't decide one amongst to. You know, all of 20 different trails or, or parks with trails in them that I would like, pick the best one for the conditions, blah, blah, blah. They just kind of ran, right? Like that's just what you do. You know? And so like it's the same with this podcast. Like, I didn't really know what the hell I was doing when I started it. I knew lots of people ran, lots of people did a podcast [00:03:00] and they were running podcasts, but I sort of did. It was being like, figure it out as I go along and along the way, like. I got better at running, you know, not great, but I got compentent I got confident enough then like I could go places far away, sign up for longer trail races and not really be like, A liability to the people around me. Whoa, Clara, what happened there? Don't you just love when dogs like, just stop Just stop. The nose hits a big red stop sign. I don't know how many times this dog's taken me out on a trail who. All [00:04:00] right around the loop de loop. So anyways, I was able to sign up for longer trail races and not be a liability to. Either other runners or myself or the race director. I got good by like doing it. And that's kind of how the podcast happened. It just got good by, well by, by some measures, good. By just doing it and getting better in practicing it there, you know, there'd be ebbs and flows. Oh, good. I'm glad I haven't been recording this run. Uh, so we'll start now. See amateur hour. Hey, uh, I don't know, what's this been like? 10 minutes? Just started my watch. Pretty great. Um, so [00:05:00] anyways, like yeah, just work on the podcast and work on running and was doing both and it was. And then as is human way, you start getting into habits. You start having things just the way you like 'em, and you choose not to... you don't want it to be different... you want it to be like, Predictable, and you want to know what you're getting. "When I go for this run, I'm gonna get this thing.", "When I listen to this podcast, I, when I do this podcast, this is what I'm gonna make" So you get comfortable and then even if you don't run for a while, And you get out of the habit, [00:06:00] you expect your runs to be just like they were when you left off. And that's just not the way. Same with, you know, let's see where this is going. So, In order to get back to what you want, you gotta be willing to start over, do something different. I don't know. Anyways, that's why I'm doing this, and that's why that hill felt so big. Whew. Metaphors, Ugh. stretch this one pretty far, but I, I do feel it [00:07:00] is appropriate. I always say, you know, and let go of what you've lost, and I've always found that a challenge to actually do. And is it lost if it's right there, right in front of you? It's not really lost. You just don't have it. So you know, whatever. Woo. The Blustery Hills of Scottsville, who. Way, way up top here on top of the world. All right. Whoa. Whenever we go downhill, Clara seems be like, you know how to do this, boy, [00:08:00] follow me and then drags me down now. So anyways, podcast a little different. You know, I tried one of these types of runs early in November, was gonna do this monologue and the leaves were crunching and all that other stuff. And it was a big to-do. It had gotten so bad like that morning when I had the idea to do it, I'm like, okay. And then I couldn't find the recording stuff, couldn't find any of my microphones, anything. Spent like, I don't know, an hour. And then I was like, "Okay, fine. Nevermind." And poof there, they appeared in front of me. [00:09:00] So then I drove to Mendon got Clara out of the car, got all geared up and started heading towards the trail. Oh yeah, microphones are still in the car. This isn't a sign or anything, so I go back and put 'em on and then like we're running and I just didn't feel it. I didn't know how to do it. Like running, talking to a microphone by myself. Like I'm some sort of blogger. Um, what, after like, oh, 25, 30 minutes, I was like, whatever, we're gonna do this. So took out the microphones, turned them all on. Made sure they were recording and [00:10:00] I did like 30 minutes. It was great. I actually enjoyed it. Leaves were crunching underfoot. There was lots of little friendly hellos and cameo appearances. Then I got back to the car. And I was like, that wasn't so bad. We could do more of this. Felt like it really grew a tiny little bit that day. Then I took the microphones off and I looked and they, they weren't on like, The blue light wasn't on, receiver, wasn't on, nothing was on, and then I got upset. But whatever. I went. I went home thinking, [00:11:00] probably got some of 'em. It's got a backup recorder, everything, plugged it into the computer and it said something like "system error. You must reformat drive to continue. You don't have be a computer nerd to know that reformatting a drive with your recordings on it is not gonna go well for the recording. But I don't think the recording was there to begin with, so. Then I was like, all right, that's strike three. Couldn't find the recordings. Didn't start the recordings. Couldn't save the recordings. Woo. Felt like real amateur, so, After Skulking for [00:12:00] quite some time, that's when I formulated this new idea. Gonna go back to basics and learn again. And start over. So I did what I did before, just put the microphone on and walked around my house recording things. Recorded things, driving practice, all the things, just like, you know, wearing any new running shoes around the house. Watching YouTube videos, listening to the podcast, talking to other people that do it. Full reboot, you know? So [00:13:00] here we are. Friends, you know what? Have you heard the good word about a wind brief? Let me tell you. It's one of my, like original pieces of winter running gear. The wind brief is just transformational because it's, it just moves one element of danger and inconvenience and uncomfort from winter running. The temperatures, I don't really mind. The temperatures generally don't mind snow or whatever, but wind, even though your core gets warm and you get all heated up and you're like, man, I overdressed well. There's a little part of you, especially fellas that never quite [00:14:00] feels overdressed during those runs, and tries to go up into your core, if I'm being honest, where all the warmth is, but the wind brief changes all that. The best 40 bucks I ever spent. Woo. Gotta tell you. But I think also as it is customary, they don't make 'em like they used to. I can't find one that's like the one that I first bought lo' those many years ago. There's not quality. You know what's up with quality these days. So that's, you know, that's my thoughts on wind briefs. Um, now where do we go from here? I don't really know. Well, you'll get more [00:15:00] for this randomness of me. By the way, Clara's my little white dog and I gotta say she's super excited to be back on the trail, so you'll probably hear from her as we run down the hills and she stops in the middle of the hill to smell for a deer and spins me around 180 degrees and dislocates my shoulder that's fine. You'll hear about that too on these little episodes, but these won't be very long because who wants to listen to me huffing and puffing and breathing? Also, I don't think we're always gonna go for a run on these off weeks. I think we might just have 15 minutes, 20 minutes. Of random thought for the day. Thing to think about. You know, Clara doesn't [00:16:00] notice deer. Like she just doesn't notice 'em unless they're D. She can smell 'em, but she does not see them. I'm looking at three deer right now, and we just walked right past him. But I think that's the thing about me always having her on a leash. She would just follow her nose and then. I think she would see deer. oh, hey, my watch thinks we won a mile. Finally. All right, well that's what we got. How about that? We'll just, just wrap it up with a little bow here, you know, so, Yeah. All right. Well, I guess, uh, faia, oh, here's an adventure. This is the Unleashed dog. That is a [00:17:00] good, good boy. We'll see. Come on, Clark. Hi there. Hi there. How's it going? Good. Hey, come on. Come on. Yeah, you did. All right. I guess. He almost came after us, but you know, they did get him to stay. All right. See ya. Huh? Well, the trails weren't super bad and hopefully there wasn't too much, uh, heavy breathing and, um, I dunno, what'd you think about this episode? Good, bad, indifferent. You'll skip 'em. You can't wait for 'em. Happy to. Not heard it. I don't know how you would know this then. Um, yeah, well if you have, uh, thoughts, opinions, you know, drop me a line at, uh, Chris at running inside out [00:18:00] podcast.com. You know, it's email. You know, we're gonna, we're gonna see how this goes. So, Until next episode, let's, uh, be grateful for the positives. Learn from the others, share what we have, and do something good. See you out there.
