HV174.mp3 Beautiful, that's fine. So we're all back as a trio finally. The show may not happen because we're all recording differently. Now we're dealing with daylight savings, so like everything's out of whack again, just when we get our rhythm. Um but where was I last week? I was away somewhere. What was I doing? Not last week, last four. In the wild of Western Australia. I was in Margaret River. That's because it was the um AFL grand final. And the less we speak of that, the better. Do you want to go into an extensive deep dive on it? So yeah, well other than the the fact that team that I've supported um since nineteen ninety-five made their second grand final and for the second time lost a grand final. Oh and uh they with four minutes to go they were they were gonna win and then they didn't win. Because that's what free man or dockers do. Do you think you just didn't support 'em enough in the last four minutes? Do you think maybe that's what happened? No, what happened is everybody else started to say, oh, you've won, you've won, your team's won. This is great. And as a true Fremantle Doctors fan, you know that no, this they can always claw defeat from the jaws of victory. This is part of the legacy of the organization. And they did it again. And then you visited Fremantle yesterday, right? yes. Then to try and, you know, and reset the soul. We uh did a little um voyage on the train with our e-bikes to Fremantle and then e-biked back from Fremantle to Perth. Um did you go to Fremantle to like compla to lodge a formal complaint or Well uh we we were having lunch at a pub, which was good, but they even still I saw some I was coming off the train station and they still had like a Go Frio Docker's sign up and I wanted to just rip it off. A little bit little bit devastating. But it was lovely. We had yeah, had lunch and then me and Bruce and Dave. Sure, Bruce and Dave. We rode back, stopping at pubs along the way. Um it was an enjoyable day. Does that sound Aussie enough to you, Jason? With his friends personally. Pubs, bikes. That seems pretty pretty Australia, really. Yeah. It's pretty Aussie, isn't it? Mixing e-bikes and pubs does does sound pretty Australian at the moment, I'll be honest. Slamming some ponies. You try and order a pint these days and you do not get a pint. You get some schoonerish, not quite a pint drink, which is very disappointing. Schoonerish, okay. Yes. Drink fla it's no not shrinkflation, drinkflation. Drinkflation title. But I managed to maybe get ourselves a new listener. Um the the topic of hemisphere views came up. Dave. Just came up naturally. Well it's like yeah, when you're in Fremantle drinking a schoonerish pint uh pony, um it's just happening. Maybe that's our new advertising. After me making you follow it. He's not listening to this right now. Not a chance. Not a chance. your five dollars that you paid him went for not because I don't think I'm actually drink as well. So I haven't thought Well now he's definitely not gonna listen to it because you owe him. I love it because it's just so thematically consistent on this show. You know, episodes ago, we're talking years ago now. Andrew would walk into Officeworks when it was happy e Offie. Yeah. Right? And he would load the Hemispheric Views website onto the demo max at the Apple stand. Now he's just going to pubs and fremantle and like playing A B C always be closing. Never stop selling. This is business call there. Exactly. Speaking of corners, do we have app corner, Jason? I'm seeing a robot. I mean with two things here? It's one corner. So I don't know. Is it a corner? If there's one thing? I suppose there could be a corner with one thing. It's a vertex. That seems isn't it? Also so we're launching a new segment. It's just called app. Yeah. App. Welcome. Okay, listeners, welcome to app. And we're gonna need a new a new title card, a new theme song. We're gonna need all new everything. Musical accompaniment background. Wait, what are you doing? X mess He's typing things in our notes. This is he's live he's live typing. This is dangerous. There we go. We've got two apps in it. Corner now. Oh he's moved stuff around. Oh you've made a corner. Well done. No he hasn't. No. No. Things are flying around. There's no corner, there's dot points. Not a corner. This is Okay. What's happened? Maybe I'll maybe I'll just maybe I'll just start. Should I just maybe I'll just take a second? I'll just start and finish before we even become a corner. How about that? Um twenty years ago, um when you both were were younger and and typing away on your Macintosh computers, you may have used a little app called App Zapper. I did. Does that name ring a bell? Cute little like uh ray gun looking icon. Martin wouldn't be old. Martin wouldn't have had it. He would be too young, yeah. I was in utero, yeah. That's true. Yeah. pre Martin. This was an app back in back in ye old age. Um well I'm proud to announce that after fifty-five years of this app being kind of not with us. It's back. It's better than ever. Ab Zapper three thousand is out now for your great nine. Midpoint apps used to be two thousand. Now we're thinking to be three thousand. No, we're going straight to three thousand now. And if you remember Absapper, many of you probably do, you would put drop the little app, I didn't even say what it was it's to uninstall apps on the Mac to like get rid of all the little weird com dot bullshit files and all that stuff. You'd drop the little app on there and it would go like it would make the little like like ray gun sound and poof it's gone. Awesome. Well app zapper 3000 does things a little differently. If you haven't tried this, I highly recommend installing it. You get three for free and you're instantly going to want to purchase it because it opens up like a little gallery view of all the files. You control the little ray gun, and you get to manually annihilate every little file with this little ray gun. Wow. It's so much fun. That's so cool. Because I can see it here, like even the website I'm scrolling and it it swivels the ray gun. You had me at that, right? Oh, it's it's whimsy at its finest. It's really, really good. That's great. Does it take way longer than you know some command line app dot shortcut proficiency GTD crap? Of course it does, and that's the point because it's fun. You should have fun with your computer. So get App Zapper 3000 today. See the dangerous thing about this is that I'm gonna want to uninstall important things now. It can happen. I've almost done it. Just shoot everything. I went to drag an app and I misclicked on the app and instead highlighted about fifteen apps and almost dragged them all in there. So y This is the true story about what happened or will happen again with all of your files with your backup recently. You were just shooting all the P Pewew Oh no where's Oh no Where's all Where's my birth certificate? It's gone So So just in the interest of you know fair fairness. I wanna no I already have two other App Zapper type apps on my computer at the moment. Two less cool ones? Tell us about the two that are less cool. I have one called App Cleaner. That sounds boring. Um and you just it Do you get to manually control a squeegee or a broom or something? No, you just drag your app onto the box. Alright? And then I've got another one sort of manual interview. Another one which is called Pair Cleaner as in the fruit. Is it what is what's the icon like? Is it like a fruit bum? We know you got like those sensual peach fruit bums. Is it with the pear? Well the icon is the pear cleaner icon is a little disappointing. It's a pear that's orange, and for me who's grown up on pack'em pears, they're really green. So I'm not comfortable. Why would you have an orange pear? It's not like the Burra Bosque or however you say it. I love those words. I'll tell you what you do. Problem solved. You install App Zapper three thousand and then you zap both of the other two app zappers. Okay. Okay. Ab zap set session session? I don't I don't even what I don't even know what that would be, but you should do that 'cause it's way better. Well can I just finish off my my icon critique please? I don't think so, no. 'Cause it's very important. I j I just need to say that PearCleaner is also in um squirkle jail. So it has just a pear on a grey background. Um, and then app cleaner, somewhat strange, I never really tweaked this, but this is why I wanted to raise it. It has like a almost like a little manila folder-esque sort of thing with some stuff in it, but on the front of that folder is a recycle icon. Now if you're zapping that I'm not recycling, it's almost like it's coming back. Well that's long been the issue that I've had with Windows. Like oh let's throw it in the recycle box so by the sounds of it, I think I need to get back to AppZappo and my Ray Gun. I wanna mention a new piece of blogging software. WordPress. It's called Outpost. It's by friend of friend of the show, friend of mine, friend of my Mastodon feed. Um Now is this a follower of yours or is this a collective friend? Because we've had this this this issue before where it was like this is an Andrew friend, not necessarily a friend of of all of us. So I I don't know. I just wanna Well Jim Jim's good because he he and I worked up and I I prototyped and then he actually did the real work of making it a proper extension of like a omnifoc um obsidian to Omnifocus um plug-in. So you can see that that would be right at my alley. So he's probably more my friend than your friend. But he's a lovely guy. I think I think you would like him. And he is American. Well. So he's in California. So you're closer. He's American, so he's in California. You're obliged to either live in California, New York or the middle, I guess. Is that he's one of those good Americans. Well if if Jim wants to be our friend, he can be our friend too. His latest app is called Outpost. Um can I guess what it does? Sure. Guess. Um when you are riding your horse across the information super horseway, you stop at the outpost to refill your internet things. It's so close. You're so close. Um actually his next icon I think is gonna be a little horse. Perfect. Um there you go, feature request. Does it nay when you open it? Because we need more sounds for sure. I'm not using apps anymore unless they do they do specific sounds related to the task. Oh just use that. He's gonna be like, oh they're talking about my app. Oh shit, they're talking about horses. That's how this show works. People go, oh, someone's talking about my app and then they hear it and they go, oh, they're talking about my app. Great. No, it's if you've ever used Mars Edit, it's a lot like that. But the reason it it came to my attention is because it can work on Pika Pika pages. And you'll all be familiar with my Pika page. We this is the big check in 'cause two weeks ago it was, you know, is Pika gonna be around, or are you gonna still be a Pika guy? What's the status? Well, uh my latest post on Pika was was a post about Outpost by Jim Mitchell. Wow. So often these segments just descend into lots of words. Your Pika Post was a post on Outpost and posted through Pika Pikachu what? I don't know. Pikachu. Yeah, that's where you chew over the details of Pika. Do you know how many copies of outposts are gonna be sold after this? This is gonna be Is it even for sale? I don't even we we haven't even let you finish this this ad read, please.. Continue I just downloaded I just downloaded it. It's just it's just a downloadable. You can just get it. Um so it's like a micro blog posting platform. You can either micro post or you can post micro posts. To your Pika. Can you Pika post? Oh yeah, totally, totally pika post. Um you can add you can add images, you know, you can little so it's like a G UI. So if you don't want use to just a web you know web interface or a little micro posting app, it's like a it's it's a full featured posting application. I have so many titles already. But it's not just for Pika. It can use any micropub um you know publishing platform. Does that make sense? Have I sold it? I think so. I I'm it's good and I like the icon at the moment because there's a very clear delineation between the yellow and the orange. In the outpost. In the icon. For outpost. Those concent kind of concentric circles that have been like pushed out of center. Yeah, where it's it's like orange like a pear. Yeah, as opposed as opposed to R orange. Is that what you're saying? Or are yellow? I'm just I'm just stirring the pot. Yeah. I'm just seeing who's gonna bite. Yeah. but instead people started talking about pears again. So didn't really work. You can write in Markdown. That's the other thing you can do. Oh. Um that's a plus. Well thank you, friend of the show, Jim. It's nice to see things like this out there. Outpost download now for Mac. or iPhone and iPad. Apparently. It's c yeah, I haven't tried that yet. I think it's in Yeah, and oh that's got it in the it's going through the Mac App Store, I think. So it should be on the Mac App Store very soon. Now this next thing I was gonna bring up on the show anyway, because I I thought Jason might be but yeah, Jason's put it here. Yeah, I was I was excited and then immediately deflated by it. Uh and that is the what is it called? Pseudo player. Yeah, I guess it's just called pseudo? Pseudo music player? I don't know. It's but S U D O not P S crediat. Isn't that sudo? I think not in the case of it being a pl a a fake iPod. I don't know. I'm not sure. Let's just say let's let's split the difference and call it sudo. Okay. Okay. So this is a I mean it's it's an iPod at the end of the day. It's somebody else making an iPod. It looks like an iPod. It does iPod y things. It looks very nice. Like the, you know, the I guess I'd call it fake industrial design, just because I've I'm sure this is just renderings. I doubt it's a finished thing at this point. And it's got a clickwheel, but it's got yeah, it's like a click wheel, it's got storage, kind of a weak amount of storage, if I had to say so, but you know, I guess storage is expensive. Um but it's got you know, it's like an iPod of today, I guess, is the the the the thing they're going for where you can plug in headphones, it's got Bluetooth, it's got USB-C, all the kind of modern stuff. It still does streaming. I don't know why. I think that's sure, whatever. Um the thing that threw me, well the thing that got me initially was like, oh cool, a dedicated audio player. I love that. Because many of them are kind of crap, and they just like they all run like Android 3 and they're slow and kind of awful to use. This felt like a modern one. There's an orange one in the pictures, so like obviously that's pretty cool. But then of it's kind of the typical thing where there's a fancy website, the again I I I I'm calling it fake industrial design just because I I can't believe this is anything other than renderings. I'd love to be wrong about that. But then it's kind of the classic thing of like a Kickstarter where it's like we have this cool thing we're making and like you can have it in like a year and a half. And it's like why why even bother? I know that I know this is like a Kickstarter thing and now I felt like I'm just kind of crapping on it, but in a year and a half we don't know what's gonna be going on if this is and it's not gonna hit that target because none of these things ever do so it's just kind of another one of those of like you get a big splash of excitement and then no one's gonna be talking about this probably ever again. And it's just unfortunate because it looks like on paper, it could be pretty damn cool. I hope that we're wrong about that, because I also saw, you know, ready Q4 2027, and to me that ready Q4 2028. Yeah, when you're when you're doing the Q4 thing, like, okay, you have no clue when because this this screams this screams to me never made a hardware product ever and has no clue what's actually going to be involved in this. And again, God, I hope I'm wrong, but like I don't know who is behind this, so I don't have any way to say like, oh, actually they made that other thing. I I don't know, I don't know. it could be very cool, but would I reserve it now to like hope I get it in 18 to 24 months? No, I wouldn't. Yeah, it's not confidence inspiring. I would love to see them be successful just because I think cool if someone's trying to do something different, even if it's largely inspired or totally based on another company's design, I think it would be very cool. Clearly, people want this sort of thing. You know, I bought a Mod Pod a couple of years back and really like that, and the fact now that they're even more like modern ones, I suppose you can say, where they even fit like these little Bluetooth units in, so you can get your AirPods working with them. It's a really nice idea, and people want it. It's obviously not as big a an audience or a market as what the Apple of today wants to sustain. But that's also what makes me interested about this, uh, the fact that if it were successful or if it did come out, just seeing how Apple would deal with it, because you you look at this and you see like copyright infringement plastered all over it. Like Apple's gonna just smash this. But it's like, Apple, you're not actually doing this anymore. You abandoned it. So if they were to launch some sort of legal action, it'd be like, okay well Apple, go make a player. Go bring the iPod back, because you're not doing anything with it. Why should the world not be able to do something like this? I mean and I guess I it'd be interesting to see how that would go. Not to say like let's go buy this, but it was kind of more of a question like what if this came out next week? Do we even think more than like the eight of us that are into this would care about this? Well, I mean f uh uh yeah, tempted to say that yes at first, but I've seen enough websites online online, even just within Australia, that do ongoing iPod repairs. You know, modified stuff just within Australia. There are eBay people all the time. So it's definitely not an iPhone sized market. It's heavily diminished, but there are enough people that if it were done well and, you know, marketed in a cool way, you know, younger people as well, going, Oh, I want that retro thing. You know, we've seen the revival of things like vinyl. I think people would jump on this. I yeah, I think people would, I just I if the amount of money that's going to go in to make this thing, it does it feels like that'd be really hard to I don't know. I I would love to see more stuff like this because again the current digital audio player market is like it's basically a handful of them that range from very, very cheap and crappy to very very expensive. And again, they still run Android 3.8 or whatever. And it's just like, what? How? So if it were available next week for the expected price of 249 US dollars and it had the name Flack 3000. Would you buy it straight away? Oh absolutely are you kidding me? That's what they're missing. Nowhere on this sheet do I see Flack. You could fit about three songs on it, couldn't you, with sixty four gigabytes in Flack? That's maybe one sixty-four gigs? That's like no, that's really small. I would expect I would think you'd want at least 512 internal cut to be comfortable. But does it play video? I can't say anything about video. I don't know. I mean it's got a it's got a very nice looking screen apparently um maybe the next one will be the the pseudo video and then you can you can watch YouTube on it I guess I don't know so that's the pseudo I it's I think it's cool. I just I don't really have high hopes. We'll check back in in Q4 twenty twenty seven. I mean really it comes down to everything's a betting market now. So let's just get a bet out there right now for the community. You now can put your dollars towards is this gonna come out first or is big mail gonna come out first that was gonna be my line I was gonna do a big mail reference oh my god That is amazing that your brain went there too. You beat me to it. Literally asking the same beat. We'll post the the over and under odds on uh on this player versus bigmail on bigmail. Stay tuned.app or is it bigmail.com? I don't it's bigmail. It's bigmail time. Crying emoji. it's there. Bigmail. Does it still have the update from like 2023 or now testing. Test flight. It's probably gonna be ready for iPhone Duo any day now. There's a Mastodon link. Hang on. That might be the latest info. Mastodon feed. Surely. Did Mastodon exist when that was a thing? No. Uh it seems to be not really loading. Perfect. It seems like they have their own mast they had they had their own Mastodon instance. That sounds right. Alright, well we'll check back in in another two years. When will Big Mail be available on the app store? We're aiming to launch on the app store of Q one. Now the Q here we go. Q one Q one twenty twenty four. Okay. So we're right there. We're almost it it's that fiscal twenty-four or calendar twenty-four. uh. Oh December development update. December of what? Uh twenty twenty three. Yeah, there it is. Okay, perfect. Media corner Media corner. Again, going back to before Martin was born. Golden Axe. Andrew? Since 2026 though. Was that before I was born? I feel like I played this on my Amiga. Golden Axe, the game that this comes from. Uh There is a TV show now for Golden Axe or as a you know part of the I don't know inspired by whatever. It is Golden Axe TV show. My review is it is so dumb and I absolutely love it. It's incredible. Is it pretty sure? I think so. I I think it it it uh it it's very ref self-referential and kind of calls out all of the dumb shit from the game. It's very funny. It's a very funny show. If you know anything about Golden Axe, you should at least watch like one or two of them to get into it because it's really, really funny. And I didn't even know about it until it came. It just came out like a week ago or like two weeks ago. Never heard a thing about it until after it was already out. So golden axe. I love the names. I haven't heard of this. Uh Axe Battler. Is it Tirus or Tyrus Flair? Tyrus, I believe. Yes, a legendary warrior's axe battler, Tyrus Flare, and Gileus Thunderhead reunite to save Uria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won't seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an experienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all. That doesn't matter. That sounds super dumb, but it's absolutely hilarious. Hampton Squib. That's really funny. So Golden Axe, if you haven't heard about it, I sure didn't uh just uh can I've just done my research and apparently yes, there was a Amiga port in late nineteen ninety, um similar to the arcade. The Amiga port is similar to the arcade with some palette changes and without parallax scrolling, which I'm a little disappointed at because uh the Amiga was famed for its ability to um to run parallax. So I don't know why. Apparently not with golden axe. You can either have golden axe or parallax. You can't have both. That's a good point. No golden parallax? It's not possible. Oh okay. Whoops. Didn't have the power. Do they have any like it's fun um cutscenes to the original video game in the show? Not so far. We I think we're four episodes in now. Okay. That'd be cool if they did that. I'd like it. Boom. All right. Someone else talk. That's me. So uh this morning, before grocery shopping, we took Mac to see Coyote versus Acme. Have either of you heard of this movie? Yes, I've heard of it, and I have not seen it, but I really want to. Well, I can confirm at least from my view. Sorry, Andrew, was that a yes or a no? No, I have not heard of it. No. Okay, so Coyote vs. Acme is the latest cinematic adventure from Warner Brothers like Looney Tunes specifically. And the premise is, and I'm just reading from movie database here, after Acme products failed him one too many times in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner, Wiley Coyote decides to hire a Billboard lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation. Now, that sounds ridiculous, and it is, but it's actually really fun. And I'm glad that we went to see it at the movies because when I first heard of this kind of premise or that the movie was coming out, I was like, hmm, would this work? Does that cause 'cause it's a hybrid movie, like it's live action mixed with animation as they've done with like Space Jam or you think about ru uh movies like Who Frame Roger Rabbit, right, separately. So um you go, how's this gonna work? But I reckon it it's fantastic. Natasha and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does a great job of mixing like the slapstick animation and chases and accidents and all that sort of disaster with like an adult story and surprisingly a very anti corporate one. I I you c I don't know, you can kind of feel like maybe within Warner Brothers there's a feeling of anti-corporateness at the moment. What? Who would have thought? It's crazy. But even like this movie it even kind of reminded me, I'll be honest. I don't want to spoil things about the movie, but I thought it was spectacular. I thought the animation was really good, it was fun. It felt really tight, like I'm I'm sure it's not to everyone's taste, but it felt very tight in how the actors with Will Forte in the lead and I think it was Lana Condor, they play Kevin and Paige, the two leads, really, really snappy, like interaction with animated characters who obviously aren't there when they're shooting. Right? It felt really tight back and forth comedy, but also a serious kind of anti-corporate topic. And funnily enough, also coming from Warner Brothers, it reminded me a little bit strangely of the Matrix Resurrections with this kind of Warner Brothers meta-narrative including flashback stuff in the movie kind of vibe. So naturally, this is a piece of you know paid popular culture. It's you know not gonna have I suppose teeth in bringing down the late capitalist order but it is nice to see the entertainment industry holding with a lens up to itself and you know you could look at ACME in this movie and go, hmm, is that a pharmaceutical company in real life or is that Apple perhaps? Hmm or is this maybe Paramount? Or I'm not look you could just apply it to any major modern corporation. So I thought it was really good and I'd recommend it. Maybe a little bit above like the five year old age range of taking Mac. He had a bit more trouble with it, but he did enjoy a lot of the learning tune stuff. So I reckon like a kind of late primary school aged kid you could take along at least and it's three questions. Yes. Is it clean or does it have the dirty E? Uh it was clean as far as I could see. Or what what I heard. Is it on Plex yet? I can't answer that. You're the other Plex guy. And what is Andrew's letterboxed review of it? Well, I can answer three. I do not yet have a letterboxed review of it because uh that'll be during next week's recording. Um next fortnight's recording, keep saying next week. But what I can respond with is Martin, you failed to lead with the most key detail that would get me interested in this movie. Is that it's the stars, John Cena. Yeah, of course. Yeah, and he uh he is very suited to the role. If it's a wrestling reference, you gotta throw that in, man. Yes, I I I know who he is and I know that's funny, but it I yeah didn't occupy a huge time of my attention during the It's like, yeah, look at look at that chiseled, unusual drawer. Wrestler guy No, but he's good in the role. It's good. And um it amazes me as well. I've c I've forgotten his name, I did see an interview, but the fact that like all these original ca no no, we're talking about someone else now. John Cena. Um like Mel Blank, right, was the original voice of all of these characters. And now they've got a guy who's been doing it for years who is like also the one voice behind everyone. It's amazing to think that it was just like a modern replication of yeah we'll get one guy to do everything. That's okay, I'm sure he gets paid you know fairly for for all of them and not just once. Yes. But of voices. A full stack voice. Future replacement by AI. Yep. Anyway, so that's that. I'd recommend goes to the next one I can't wait to see it. I think it looks super fun. I r the first thing I heard about it was something like it was it was supposed to be cancelled or like it was cancelled or or something and then it got picked back up or there w I think there was drama with it in terms of it even becoming a movie. But I'm not entirely sure what how what happened there. But it sounded like it was gonna be lost to the ages and then it got re-picked up somehow, which is good. I think if you approach it, particularly as an adult going, this is just a bit of silly fun, which actually does have a bit of a serious, you know, modern message behind it. Just it's a bit of absurdity. It's basically Golden X TV. it's absurd, but has a a modern message. Yeah. Exactly.. Okay Uh media cor oh media corner had one more I mean it's kind of media corn yeah, I guess it's media corner. Um It is, yeah. Well there's a gaming corner, but we'll just shoehorn it into this because it is a form of media. We're very loosey goosey here. Yeah. It's really just uh I went to actually got back just a few hours ago from Portland Retro Gaming Expo and it was as always a delightful show. If you have ever heard of it or ever wanted to go to it, absolutely go. It's incredible. There are a million arcade machines, pinball machines, every console from every age. You want to play a Commodore 64? You want to play an Amiga? You do it. All free to play. Just go do it. Bunch of vendors. They have the world world Tetris what is it? World Tetris Championship? I feel like there's four letters, but that's intense. Watching these like professional Tetris people just like go insane with Tetris is it's very stressful to watch, but it's very exciting. So yeah, if you have if you want to go to that one, go to it. If you ever thought you wanted to, if there's another retro gaming thing in your area or neck of the woods, go to it. They're delightful. We never get that kind of cool stuff here. The more we have this, you know, these podcast recordings from like, wow, Portland sounds cool. There's a lot of stuff happening there. It's very cool. And we have a lot of bridges. So doubly cool. Imagine if we move there, how cool it would become if we were to set foot. Like the coolness factor. Oh, if just explode. It would be all over the news, you know, because people still watch the news. I'm chang I'm changing pace a little bit here. I wanna ask you guys. Are you changing pace or are you changing tires? Mm. I'm changing tires. And you spell that T Y R E. Says Andrew. T Y R E. When's the last time either of you, well when did you learn to change a tie, assuming you have learnt, and when did you last apply that knowledge in the real world? Jason is indicating to me first. Well that's great. Um to be honest, I've never like had to learn or do it, and the one time that I did have to deal with a tire, my colleagues Craig and Tim at work jumped in to help because it was in the work car park and they did it and we took a selfie as they did it. So I'm just surrounded by good friends and I never have to learn. I'm pretty useless. Wow. So would you if if push came to shove, Martin, would you change a tire? Yeah. Oh, I know enough about the basic mechanics of of it and you know where the stuff is in the boot and how to lift the car and stuff, it was it would just be more that I would be really slow and cautious because I'd be like, am I about to crush my hand or something because if I put you know it's just more about the the finesse or you know the practice of it. I know how it how it works. But um yeah, so I'm grateful for my colleagues 'cause they did it more safely and efficiently and we got a funny selfie out of it, which I'm not sure if I can share on the show. But you can imagine three white guys in a car park looking really happy that a time was changing. I can't imagine that. Yeah., there you go I'm seeing it now. Jason, what about you? You over there in America with your T I R E's. Do you know how to deal with them? Yeah, our T yeah, which are a little different here. They go the other way, which is strange. But you know Cariolis. That's just hemispheres. What are you gonna do? Up over. Is that the opposite of down under? Up over? Up over. All you up over. Yeah, I think the first time I changed a tire was probably at my uh when I when I was working my first job when I was six years old at a filling station and I was forced to work down the street changing tire no. Um I think it was probably I was really concerned for a second there. Back at the time of chimney sweeps. I changed tires in the chimney. That's how bad things were back then. Uh I was probably I don't know thirteen maybe or something? Like something like that. Pre-driving. Yep. I think that was just one of those like things you you are taught, like here's how to do this, because you're probably gonna have to do it someday. The last time I actually needed to, thank goodness not for a long time, over probably 20 years ago. Um yeah, just I've I've had very good tire luck, I guess, which that probably shouldn't say that out loud. So that's probably tomorrow now. So thank you for that. Probably all four of them tomorrow, actually. That's how that'll go. Well what prompted my thinking on this was because of a real life experience, as these things often go, is that my car had a black tire the other day. And I was about to change it. And then I because I was taught when I was begging my license, my stepfather taught me how to change a tire. and I had to and like his rules were if you don't learn how to change the tire you're not allowed to drive the car. Right? But okay. Does that apply to the whole engine? Well I had to learn I had to learn so many bits of engine fixing. Yes, I did. Okay, there you go. Thoughts I sound like. But yeah, so I was about to change this tire and then I suddenly realized, hang on, hang on. In this house of mine, I have a teenager who has a license who probably doesn't know how to change a car. Teaching moment. Yep. So rather than me doing it myself, I got the boy. I got labor coming help change the tyre. And I tell you what, it was hilarious because I could see having been that teenager, having to learn how to change the tyre, I could see me in him, and I was like, oh my god, this is exactly what I was like. Cause he's like, uh not really. Do you want to help? No. Okay, you're gonna come and help. Like, just not really into it at all. And I'm I'm instructing him. Okay, see this point here, this is where you can put the jack. You know, this is where how you want. Okay, you do it. Winding he's winding it up, like not looking very happy about it. I'd be pretty filthy about it. Well he got filthy because then he had to try and lift the tire off, so he got dirt on his hands. You know, this is it was it was a lot of fun for me. on a level of one to ten, one being the worst, ten being the best, how crap of a jack did you make him use? And did it actually have all the components? So it wasn't it was a brand new jack because it was the one that came with the car. You know those little Ah and and because it was that one, it means that the little windy mechanism was really really poor. So it kept like wobbling around all over the place. You kind of have to put these two random bits of metal together to create the crank. Um so that was a lot of fun. And then yeah, he and then I was trying to get him to put the other to the new tire onto it and he couldn't quite get the angle of the you know getting the the hole into the the into the the the nut thing that screwed up. And you you s you s and you stood by and helped willingly and didn't just stand back and and I stood I stood back for a while until he literally couldn't do it and then I was like, yeah, let me. And uh were you two wearing high viz uh when you were doing this? Isn't that like a state requirement? Uh no, I think it was either bare f I think it was Thongs, which is Australian safety gear. Yeah. Especially when you're lifting cars. Yeah. So it was all good. Um but he finally got done. So and it was just a fun moment of like, ah, there we go. I have I have passed on my knowledge. I am now you know, the student has become the master. And I'm teaching and I felt exactly like an old guy teaching a young guy how to change the title, which is exactly what I was doing. But it's like I used to be the young guy and now I'm not anymore. And you double you double checked all those lug nuts afterwards. Absolutely. Absolutely. Okay, thank you. Thank goodness. Just drive away and double check. Double I triple check. And uh And it's do you know the other thing? Then I had to drive my car around with the tire of shame on it. It was one of those ones. It was like yeah, half size skinny guy. It's so embarrassing. It is like when a dog has to wear those cones. And it's still on there because you can't be bothered to go get it fixed? No, I don't know. I got it fixed straight away, but unfortunately the tie was actually had two punctures in it and so bad one on the shoulder I had to buy a new tire five hundred dollars. Did you take an iPad and a game controller to the tire shop? That's a good question. How did you know that was gonna be the follow up? No, but I I I had counter chat. I had counter chat. Alright, here we go. Let's go. He initiated it, right? The guy behind the counter initiated the counter chat. I went with it. wait, wait. Was his initiation here's how much it costs, pay us now? Because that is not an initiation. No. It went beyond that. He started to complain about old people in his waiting room who were using their phones having a conversation like on the speaker phone and how annoying that is because he's trying to run a business he's trying to take phone calls and he can't hear those phone calls because the person having it cranked right up. He's like, Look, I've even got signs in the waiting room saying don't do this. And he got really worked up about it. Um, totally frustrated with the fact and like how disrespectful people are and how f phones have ruined society. And people are so like just ignorant of other people's, you know, inconsiderate. Um did you tell them about the new iPhone Pros that just came out. Oh look, I I I I engage with him. With then he took me out the back. He took me into the workshop. Are you okay? And sort of walked me through. Well, I was like, what what what's going on? But he was just he was giving me a shortcut to my car where it was parked through the workshop. But then he went on to have a conversation about how he was you know, how people throw stuff on roads and it causes punctures and it's terrible and then he saw somebody doing it the other day and he told him not to and he got abused and, you know, was told to go back to his own country. And then we got into a whole, you know um sort of like the challenge of racism. It was wow, this this went all over the place. It really did. It really did. Um, so yeah. So you met a new friend, it sounds. Well, I'm going back. Totally. So shout out. I mean, I kind of feel like if you own a tire shop, wouldn't you kind of like people thing Well yeah, you think so. You think that's kinda like that's that's your pathway to more money. It's kinda good for business. It's like hey, you over there you missed a spot. Just a few more needles over there or pins or something. You only got one of his tires twice. You could have got two of his tires once, and I would have had a double sale. So Yeah, I've got some glass shards to spare if you wanted to put it. So anyway, counter chat. Oh, sorry, it was a bit of a a crazy recounting of that story because um I didn't anticipate talking about it. But there we are. Counter chat. Did you anticipate jury duty? I did. I anticipated it three months ago when I got my little piece of paper in the mail. Uh you get a little card and it says, you know, you need to you need to go register. This is the first time I've ever had it here. Um, the first time I've ever been uh summoned in the state. So I got the little card, I went and signed up immediately, was excited, I was ready to go, and then completely forgot about it because they tell you way too far I guess other people have like things that they do. I'm like, I don't I got nothing going on, so you I can kinda go whenever. Um Um it's like when you called me, I can go now. What yeah, like I could have I could have pulled the thing out of the mailbox and been there in fifteen minutes. Like, let's go. What's on the docket today? I'm ready. Uh so three months later happens, and um I go to you have to call the so I'm telling you this just so you can kind of think about in your own mind how it works there, because that's my real question. Uh the night before you do your check-in to see if you've actually been called. Because you get called, but you're only kind of like pseudo called in that I guess they call, you know, let's say they call a hundred people, and then out of that hundred, they're only really needing like, you know, twelve. So the di the night before you go and check in and you're like, oh, you're jur three and we want one, two, and nine through fifty-five. And you're like, okay, well, I'm I'm done then. So I lost my card, which is the way you want to do it. But fortunately, because if it's a piece of paper, I scanned it with my scan snap iX500. Yep. So I had a copy of it so I could check the night before. And unfortunately I did not get called. So my summons is now fulfilled So I didn't get to do it and I was bummed and I cause I wanted to do it. And um then I was like, wait, I wonder what you all do in terms of jury wait, do they even have jury duty? What do they even do? Who knows what they're doing down there? No one knows what happens down under. So that's why I wanted to ask, what's jury duty like, or do we even have it? Have you seen Mad Max? That's just kind of what it's like down here. It's w it was a documentary. I've seen Mad Max and that's why I was like, I don't remember maybe it was in the deleted scenes, the jury duty. I don't know. I didn't s I didn't watch the director's cut. no jury's just fighting over petrol and water and precious resources. Yeah. So what do you think? Jury duty? Do you A, do you have it? And if you do, is it is it basically the same thing? So I was summoned once. Uh now I think exactly yeah, just ten years ago. I think it was twenty sixteen. And I was pretty excited about it too. Went to, you know, local courthouse in uh Woolong. What's the process there? What kind of whole process? How do you how do you get to w going there? Oh look, I don't know if it was three months in advance, but it was a decent chunk of time and I had to put it into my calendar so I would not forget it, you know, because that would be embarrassing or not allowed. You'd have to turn up. Um, went to the courthouse, did the whole thing where you meet the group and listen to people and wait in lines, then go in this waiting room, and then they would bring you into the actual court and basically line you up in front of the uh the defense right right and you would see the accused and they would look at you and basically go yeah or nah and I was part of the general nah, and so I didn't get to do it. I was disappointed. Clearly something about my face either put them off or did not inspire them. We want it guilty or not guilty, Martin. We don't want a whole expose here, okay? Yeah, it's like already this whole description's taking too much time, Martin. Get on with it, right? Get a move on. So yeah, I missed out. It was a nice kind of day off, I suppose, and uh an interesting insight into the process, but uh yeah. Was that kind of similar to what you've seen before? And even when we go down there, if you do get called, there's still a chance that you don't they don't need you. So there's a lot of gates to get through. So Andrew, have you been on a jury before? I was called once. Called There you go. Building up the real deal. What do they just call you guys once in your life? What is this? It's very seldom. Which I don't know how that is it because we have a small population? But we were supposed to be full of convicts. This shouldn't be once a week. See you next Thursday. so so my mem my memory of the process is very much like Martin's, except I when the when the Yeah Nabi was happening, I got yeah. Um but oh I it was it still remains one of my proudest experiences in life. I loved it so much because um when we I got to go into the jury room, you know, and it's like an interesting experience and I was like, have you ever seen that movie um twelve angry men? Oh yeah. Yeah. I was like that. There was me and one other guy that were were were considering the guy to be guilty and everybody else was like, nah, innocent. And we had to turn them. So I had to work the room one by one turning people's opinions. And it went for hours and hours. So you got them beyond reasonable doubt. Mm-hmm. you crushed their reasonable doubts. Yep. worked the room for hours. And uh managed to get a managed to get a conviction. And then it turned out got this extra information that they weren't allowed to share with the jury at the time. Um that yes, he was absolutely guilty. So I was like Whoa I felt very proud of my civic civic duty mindedness. Alright, we'll see you in twenty five years. There you go. Yeah, I hope to get it again, although I'm sure maybe I don't hope to 'cause it probably won't be as cool of an experience. I I've only ever done it once, but it was like it was in California and it was it was a horrible experience. I won't go through the whole thing, but it was like a horrific multiple murder drug thing. And yeah, like it was and it lasted, I think it was like a month or a month and a half. It was one of those where they're like, come in for two days and they're like, ah, you're gonna be here for like a long time. It's like fuck. Okay. And they but they, you know, they pay you like 36 cents a week. So that's nice. Um and it was super interesting. It's just the only thing I didn't like about it was that like you said, Mart, like you're you're s you're all sitting there as you know about to make a decision on these as they're going through all the shit. And like every single person that's up there for perceived like gruesome murder, they're just staring at you the whole time, like memorizing your face. I'm like, this is this okay? Should we should we be face to face? Like maybe I could go back a couple rows. This just feels a little a little close for them being able to look at me for a month straight. 'Cause they're gonna probably remember what I look like. Um but other than that, yeah, it was a great experience. So hope to hope to do it again sometime.
