Episode 112 — Matthew 7:13–14 — The Narrow Gate Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s great to be here with you today.
Today is April 22. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down You are stepping into a sacred space with the intent of meeting Jesus.
He wants to meet with you and spend time with you. Take this moment to slow down, quiet your mind, and prepare your heart to connect with Him. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are the way.” As you exhale, pray: “I choose to follow You.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence. Read You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell* is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.  (Matthew 7:13–14, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear these words again, not as a grim warning designed to produce fear, but as an honest and loving invitation from Jesus to choose the road that leads somewhere worth going. Meditate The wide road is wide for a reason: it requires nothing of you. No surrender, no sacrifice, no reordering of priorities. You can bring everything you are — all your self-sufficiency, your comfort, your control — and it will all fit through the gate just fine. The narrow gate is different. It requires you to set things down to get through. Pride. Self-reliance. The need to be in control. The life that looks attractive to the world. You can’t carry all of that through a narrow gate. Jesus isn’t describing two religions. He’s describing two ways of living. One is the path of least resistance — drifting with the culture, following every appetite, avoiding anything that costs you something. The other is the deliberately chosen life of following Jesus — costly, sometimes lonely, often countercultural, but leading somewhere real and lasting. Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
In what area of my life am I drifting on the wide road right now — taking the path of least resistance when Jesus is inviting me onto something harder and better? Respond Jesus, I want to choose You — deliberately, daily, even when it costs me something. Show me where I’ve been drifting, and give me the courage to step back onto the narrow path. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Intentional Living — Make One Countercultural Choice Today Today’s habit is a deliberate act of narrow-road living: make one intentional, countercultural choice today — something that reflects your commitment to follow Jesus even when the easier path is right there. Maybe it means choosing honesty when a small deception would be easier. Maybe it means serving someone when you’d rather be served. Maybe it means turning off something that’s been numbing you and spending that time with God instead. Maybe it means saying no to something everyone else is saying yes to. The specific choice matters less than the spirit behind it: I am choosing the narrow road today. Not because it’s easy, but because it leads somewhere. Before you make the choice, pray: “Jesus, I want to walk with You — even here, even in this small thing. Lead me through the narrow gate.” That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard… share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
