Episode 138 — Matthew 13:31–32 — The Parable of the Mustard Seed Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is May 18. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down Jesus is here.
He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him. You have a million things on your mind that need your attention, but right now it’s time to be with Jesus. Set those things aside, relax, and calm your body. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, nothing is too small.” As you exhale, pray: “Do something great with what I bring.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read Here is another illustration Jesus used: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches.”  (Matthew 13:31–32, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear this parable again — and sit with the contrast: the smallest of all seeds, the largest of garden plants.   Meditate Jesus chooses the mustard seed deliberately. It was the word picture you would use to describe something insignificant, barely worth noticing. And yet, He says, this is what the Kingdom of Heaven is like. Not a cedar. Not an oak. A mustard seed. Something so small you could lose it between your fingers. Something that looks, at first glance, like nothing at all. And from that seed — a tree large enough for birds to nest in. A sheltering, living, fruitful presence that no one looking at the original seed could have predicted. This parable is a word of encouragement for anyone who feels like what they have to offer is too small to matter. The prayer that feels inadequate. The conversation about Jesus that felt clumsy. The small act of kindness that no one noticed. The faithful, unglamorous showing up, day after day, that never seems to produce anything visible. Jesus says: don't despise small beginnings. The kingdom grows from seeds, not spectacles. And the One who designed the mustard seed knows exactly what He put inside it. Take a few moments to reflect on this question: Is there something small I've been dismissing as too insignificant to matter - that God might want to use as a mustard seed? Respond Jesus, I bring You what I have today, I trust You to do with it what only You can do. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Small Faithfulness Today's habit is a mustard seed act: identify one small thing you've been putting off because it seemed too insignificant to bother with - a brief prayer for someone, a kind word, a tiny act of service — and do it today with full intention. Don't wait until you have something more impressive to offer. Plant the seed. Trust the Farmer. Before you do it, pray: "Lord, I know this seems small. But I offer it to You. Do with it what only You can do - and let it be the beginning of something I can't yet see."
